Hayley quite seriously for a minute , if she is asking for food and then doesn't go to it, it could be there is a medical problem. One of our cats did that, and would seem to 'forget' where she was going and vere off ... it was caused by blood poisoning affecting her brain... if she is also drinking a lot get her checked for kidney failure.

Growing up with cats in the house as a child, and seeing many out, the worrying signs would be change in behavior, exceptional laziness, not eating, constant calls for attention and rapid weight loss.

If you are seeing the above, seek advice from a vet.

So sorry Hayley! but you didnt say it was a she cat - you just said "cats" )))))) It can refer to either sex (oh, can I say that word before 9.00 pm??)

Female cats are slightly different to boy cats - well, you'll know that of course.

Has your "queen" had a litter (queen being the proper terms for a female adult cat) or was she spayed at an early age? Cos I think this might make a difference.

See, my last lady cat reached the age of 19 - yes 19 - before she started to show signs of losing it! so in human terms she was a really old girl. She started to wander all over the house, with no particular purpose (or so it seemed to us - it might have seemed different to her of course - who knows?)

She wasnt dirty, didnt make a mess, just seemed in a world of her own. She ate well but didnt go out as much as previously had. One day she walked around the sofa abouot 100 times, oblivious to anything or anyone, and it was then we knew she had reached the end of the road. Vet seemed to think she had probably suffered the equivalent of a stroke in humans.

Get your old girl to the vet for an MOT - if they say she's OK, look after her as well as you can, and she'll reward you with a purr......................

She was done at 22 weeks Jac, we just caught her before her first seasonthingy... she has never had a litter , if its sunny warm she sleeps all day and out all night, she hates the rain and cold she refuses to sleep alone ( even though I dont like it but the kids spoilt her ) but sleeps like cats do she knows everyones timetable and doesnt like if it changes,

I ended up with a friends cats once - one was 20 odd (he came with friends house!) The other was 8, and I had 2 cats of my own aged 10.
The elder one definitely became senile within a couple of years.
The 8 year old would be in her favourite place - a paper bag - and the eldest one would just lay on top of it!
The younger one would just lay there until I moved the elder one. If he had behaved like that a few years previously - she would have 'had a go' at him!
In fact as time went on he got worse at settling down on other cats, and was getting a bit 'wobbly'.

Took him to the vet - who said at his age he 'probably' had kidney disease and they could give him a course of very expensive pills, or it could be because he was old!!! (Don't you just love the precise diagnosis).
He was a pedigree 'american snowshoe', average lifespan 9 - 15 years, had gone way past this, so I'm afraid he was sent to the great hunting ground in the sky.

Hi Hayley

Have been scrolling back, Joy could be right. My tomcat who passed on last year had a thyroid problem, tis easily rectified with special tablets and food from the vet.

One of my cats passed on aged 19.

Not sure if they get senile, 10 is a young age ... might be worth asking the Vet, I would. Bless her, she sounds lovely. xxx

Granny Grumps Report 13 May 2009 20:28

A man runs into the vet's office carrying his dog, screaming for help. The vet rushes him back to an examination room and has him put his dog down on the examination table. The vet examines the still, limp body and after a few moments tells the man that his dog, regrettably, is dead.

The man, clearly agitated and not willing to accept this, demands a second opinion. The vet goes into the back room and comes out with a cat and puts the cat down next to the dog's body. The cat sniffs the body, walks from head to tail poking and sniffing the dog's body and finally looks at the vet and meows. The vet looks at the man and says, "I'm sorry, but the cat thinks that your dog is dead too."

The man is still unwilling to accept that his dog is dead. The vet brings in a black Labrador. The lab sniffs the body, walks from head to tail, and finally looks at the vet and barks. The vet looks at the man and says, "I'm sorry, but the lab thinks your dog is dead too."

The man, finally resigned to the diagnosis, thanks the vet and asks how much he owes. The vet answers, "$650." "$650 to tell me my dog is dead?" exclaimed the man.... "Well," the vet replies, "I would only have charged you $50 for my initial diagnosis. The additional $600 was for the cat scan and lab tests."

Granny Grumps Report 13 May 2009 20:38

Once upon a time, there was a cat who died. When she got to heaven, God asked her how she liked being on earth. She told the Lord that it was awful, she had to sleep in cold back alleys where there was no food and life was hard. God told her that he was sorry it had had turned out that way but here, in heaven, she would be happy and He would give her the most comfortable, warm pillow to sleep on. The cat laid down upon the pillow and was happy.

A few days later, about a dozen mice that came to heaven together and God asked them how they had liked earth. Earth was no better for them than it was the cat.

They explained to God that it was tough and exhausting and their feet were worn out from always running from cats and dogs and people. God felt bad for the mice and decided to give them rollerskates.

One day God sees the cat again and asked her how she was liking heaven. She explained that it was absolutely wonderful. The pillow he gave her was the most comfortable place that she had ever slept on, but even better than the pillow were the meals on wheels.

My friend has always said her mother loves her cats more than her grandchildren. A couple of years ago her mother had gone to visit her bother somewhere and my friend was looking after her beloved queen. The cat got out in the front garden she never normally went out, and next door reversed over her. My friend took the cat to the vet and the vet did all he could, and after a few days told my friend she could take the cat home but he didn’t hold out much hope for it and give her plenty of TLC (this was after my friend refused to have her put down till her own mother came home). She did so pamper the cat as much as she could the cat lay on a heated pad whilst my friend danced attendance on her. She got up one morning and sadly the cat had passed away, she rang her mother who was distraught and asked my friend to place her gently and nicely in a box as the mother was returning home the next day and take it to the vets to be cremated. My friend feeling really guilty promised. However they she come to put her in the box, rigamortius had set in and it wouldn’t fit, so my friend put on the heated pad and place the cat back on it till it did fit.
