that computers and mobile phone texting - altho extremely convenient - are killing the art of communication ? ? ?

I find that I hardly speak to the majority of my friends & family, altho I have regular contact by PC or mobile, and I've realised that I need to address this and make an effort to phone folk more cos you just can't beat a good old natter eh ??? :O))))

*if I have your number - be warned lol*

Definately!!

I think that putas and texting is ideal for the short msg like want to meet for cuppa and so forth....But nowdays i find that majority of people are so busy that they use texting as an easy option to keep in touch without the meeting up.....sad really.

Couldn't agree more with Janet.

It is also a cowards way of contact, hiding behind a key board and mobile phone. Some people can be very hurtful and spiteful via text and e-mail as my 14 year old daughter has learned to her cost.

I am talking about MSN and text messaging and not GR.

In fact a few of my friends have done away with the home line and have only the mobile...

*Lifts phone off hook* ;-pppp

Phone calls are a better means of communication then text messages, although face to face is even better, though not always possible. Text messages are more convenient when you are busy just to let someone know you haven't forgotten them and can be a good thing so long as they don't replace phone calls/face to face conversations.

Emails depend on the type of email. Those that do the rounds are like text messages good for letting people know you are thinking about them. However, emails can be like letters, telling the receipient about what is going on in your life. These are a good thing, even better than letters because at least you know they're more likely to get there than via the royal mail lol

I don't think texts or even the forwarded emails are a bad thing so long as they don't replace other forms of communication entirely.

We hardly use the land line at all these days, its handy for any 08 numbers etc that I may need to ring, but other than that, it's pretty redundant now. I am beginning to wonder if it is worth keeping, but I know if I was to get rid of it, I'll miss it!!

Perhaps I should make a concerted effort to actually ring friends & family more instead of emailing and msn'g, text etc....

Good thread McAnne...:)0

Hmmmmmm interesting question.......I have to say I have stopped using text messaging so much nowadays as the novelty has totally worn off and I'm too lazy lol.

I use the phone loads........and am useless at answering emails etc.....so for me mobiles and the web haven't changed my habits whatsoever....i'll always prefer a good old natter .

Great thread ;0)

LOL Julie .................. you're so gonna miss out if you do that luv lol

I do agree that a quick text is nice in some respects - like getting a pm on here - you know that someone has thought of you ..............

I have to admit tho that a lot of the time i hold back from phoning because i know alot of my friends have families/children and i either leave it until, what i consider to be too late to call, or i just don't in case i'm intruding or whatever.

Whirls - i have at one stage thought about getting rid of the landline when i've been over run with credit on my pay and go lol

Muffs - yes i think many of us know you love a good old natter - i really enjoyed 'listening to you' that time pmsl lmso - if you gave me your landline you might get a call back one day lolol xxx

I don't have a mobile phone and have never had one.....in fact I freak out if my OHs mobile does anything.......lol

I use e-mail a lot to send news to friends but I like a chat on the phone best of all , nothing like hearing the voice of a friend or relative. In fact I had a lovely call from one of my Dads cousins ( that I only managed to track down recently ). I'd sent her some long lost photos of family members in the hopes that she and her sister could identify them .
Her voice sounded lovely ( sing song Welsh accent ) .

I also write good old fashioned letters on paper quite a lot.........lol

Amanda : )

BOBBIE Report 10 Mar 2009 11:56

people don't use the landlines now (which is cheaper) because they sit down with the mobile phone at their side and are to idle to get up and use land line.they say the mobile calls are free but if you are on contract you are paying £20-30 a month for your free calls

ChAoTicintheNewYear

ChAoTicintheNewYear Report 10 Mar 2009 12:21

Anne you know you're welcome to ring me at any time :-) I wouldn't recommend it at the moment though cos I'm full of a cold and there are times I can't stop sneeing. Not exactly conducive to a chat lol

I take it Muffy is the English version of Jilly then lol

Bob, I often have my landline phone next to me. I often carry it about the house too when talking on it.

I don't have a mobile other than daughter's cast-off which we take if we are on a long journey and family might want to contact.
It is not unusual for a particular friend and I to talk on landline for nearly an hour or so some days and I also keep in touch with some cousins and have a lengthy chat with them, from time to time.
E mail is great for quick messages though.
Friends and I try to meet up in the evening every few weeks for a good old natter.
We call it Girls' night....well we can think young !

TonyW Report 10 Mar 2009 13:10

Hey McAnne - please take Muffy up on the offer as she's never off the blinky phone to Mrs W!! I might save a few bob on my phone bill!

But - be warned...... she can talk under water!!

Edit: 90 minutes TW? Is that all? Mrs W and her only take a breath about every 90 minutes lol

Texting is certainly killing the art of conversation. It is also destroying written English. For example, "my good friend" becomes "me gr8 m8". I love the English language and txt spk is ruining it.

Apart from the fact that I have made no effort to understand it, anyone who ever gets a text from me will get the Queen's English, correctly punctuated, semi-colons et al!

This is going to be perhaps a tad controversial, but excellent thread none the less!

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy

McAnne's Gahan-Crazy Report 10 Mar 2009 13:19

PMSL Tony (oops sorry txt spk lol)

I know what you mean and I know it's done so as to cram as much into a text as poss to save credit - but you do need to be a Krypton Factor contestant to understand alot of it I agree lolol

I might ring Muffy when I have a day off or nowt urgent to do ;O)))
