Finally got around to watching this. Fascinating stuff though my lot had moved into Essex by the 60's.

Thank you so much for posting this Gary. I have just spent an evening watching it. Wonderful, takes me back. I wouldn't mind films like this given away with the newspapers. History at it's best. Such a shame that so much of old London has disappeared.

Ball Court, Giltspur Street.-East out of Giltspur Street, in Farringdon Ward Without (Collmgwood, 1907).

First mention : O. and M. 1677.

Called " Bull Court " in Horwood, 1799. " Ball Yard," Rocque, 1746.

Site now occupied by the new Out-Patient Department and other buildings of St. Bartholomew's Hospital.

are you sure it wasnt GILTSPUR street, there are two on Victorian A-Z street index, One is CITY - FARRINGDON WITHOUT the other Finsbury/ Holborn Nc1a, the Holborn one was still there in 1997

Jean you were right i think you were standing out side the church if i remember right,i found this one as well of my ggparents Saint Sepulchre in London my gg.father was church beadle in Christhospital,and they lived 4 ball court Gittspur street in 1886,even though my family came from London have no idea were this place is,my dad was born in Barnet

Don't know if you heard this story, but Our GG Grandfather was supposed to of had something to do with the clock at St Pancras. I've been researching this, both he and his father were watch/clockmakers I have been in touch with the clockmakers guild and a leading authority on tower clocks but they were unable to prove one way or the other wether thay were involved. I have also managed to trace Grandads Brother Herberts Grave in Flanders. Will Pm the details later.

Aah Dutch, I've just had a look on the web and found there is another St Silas in the vicinity - Risinghill Street N1 - http://www.saint-silas.org.uk/

I always thought the church name was very rare, which is why I find it odd that there are two churches of that name within a few miles of one another.

Mind you, here are several people (some of them having never met before) all talking about the same parts of London, so I shouldn't be suprised by coincidences!

For sale 3 bed house £425,000. Talma Road, Brixton, gives some idea of the price of property..

Eyebrows Ed.....I think Joyce (Dutch) is referring to St Silas, Penton Street. If she is that is where I was baptized on 26.12.1937. I am sure that in the past I sent Dutch a photograph of it.

Lynda, David, Maz and I called in there on one of our earlier jaunts round Islington. The vicar happened to be there at the time and tok the trouble to look up my baptism and print out a copy for me.

It is a very beautiful church and still a big part of the community.
