Forecasters Warning

Major Sleet / Snow / Ice Event

Affecting (1): Central & southern Scotland, N Ireland, N England

Valid: 12:00, Wednesday 4 February - 00:00, Friday 6 February 2009.

This is a Severe Weather Warning issued at 11:00 on Wednesday 4 February 2009.

The front that had been heading northwards since Monday, and brought all the havoc to south-east England, reached the far north of Britain yesterday – and, having been reactivated by a secondary low north-east of Scotland, is now its way back south.

For Thursday advanced warning of sleet and snow, particularly for southern Scotland and northern England, propelled by a biting northerly. Snowfall over high land will add to that which has already accumulated in the last few days. On Friday the front will make further progress into northern England.

Affecting (2): Southern Britain

Valid: 12:00, Wednesday 4 February - 12:00, Friday 6 February 2009.

This is a Severe Weather Warning issued at 11:00 on Wednesday 4 February 2009

The primary low that moved up from northern France and generated the snow across England and Wales, reached the Celtic Sea yesterday – and, over the course of the next 24 hours or so, will do almost a complete pirouette by returning ‘vers la France’ where it first developed. In so doing it will send an active frontal band northwards across southern England.

Although temperatures are not quite as low as last Monday – during the afternoon rain / sleet is most likely across Cornwall and much of Devon – there is the strong potential later tonight and into Thursday for several hours of sleet / snow across parts of southern England, south Wales and the Midlands. That is not all. The low is next likely to pass close to southeast England, before heading towards the Low Countries by Saturday. This creates the conditions for another major disruptive weather event late Thursday and Friday, with further moderate-to-significant accumulations for some parts of England and Wales. Metcheck will have a better idea tomorrow of locations most likely to receive the snow.

This Severe Weather Warning will be updated tomorrow, Thursday 5 February 2009.
