Rita,
Workhouses or Poorhouses.
In many ways these were the nearest folk had to a Nursing Home. Although many were run very badly some were excellent and did good work in caring for those who had Dementia or were just frail and infirm. The mortality rate in children was very high.
Robert Owen , an Industrialist, built Mills at Lanark in Scotland and alongside these he provided housing, schools, and a care home for his workers. A man of great vision and compassion.
The Cadbury Bournville Village is modelled along the same lines.
So much for the 'good old days'.

Jean my arm was sore when I got to bed last night but it passed. but I had a fever not too bad. but it is over and done with now. thank you for asking.
Stephen I hope your hospital appointment goes off well tomorrow. good luck.
where is that George today, keeping in the warm I bet. we have the gale wind here at the moment all afternoon its blowning like mad.
I only have normal Anecstry Marilyn mine is due soon. not sure what date ? Pat they showed you snow in Scotland on the weather after mid-day news. so take warm clothing with you. this winter coming up has come so quickly this year. I dont know where the summer went, ?
Yvonne I was dissapointed with last nights WDYTYA . but many people seem to have enjoyed it.
I had some of my family from London end up in the workhouse. many had children while in there and the children died. but dont forget some of the work houses acted as hospital as well for the very poor. one of my Great Grandfather. ( who had served on submines in the 1st world war )suffered from breathing trouble and ended up in the workhouse. my sister and I went and had a look through the book took three of us to lift that book onto the desk top. and it told you when he went in and what treatment he had and when he was sent home.
we found it very interesting..

Sunny but windy here today
Hope everyone is ok. I've got the dentist next week for a check up
I thought that WDYTYA was interesting last night. A few of my rellies ended up in the workhouse. It was sad about his gggrandfather commiting suicide.

Hi Linda,
Glad your dental treatment went OK....just keep smiling !! LOL
Yes I'm really pleased I just thought I would change to FMP as they keep mailing me with discount ,so I thought I'll try Ancestry for discount and it worked out to 25% discount.
But although my subs aren't renewable until November Ancestry e-mailed me to remind me of my Annual subs. I had to pay for the new subs but they said it will follow the old subs when its due in November.
Pat.... have a great holiday .....give my love to Stevey should you have the pleasure in bumping in to him. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Well done Marilyn I'll keep a note as I think I run out in November. No I'm retired I need my pennies as I won't get anything for nearly 3 years.
Well I had the tooth out a little odd as still very numb. But no problems as there was little left of it. Hubby had one smoothed off and another white filled and made up, looks like a real tooth. He's pleased. Check up in six months.
Enjoy Scotland Pat.
Breezy here but I'll stay in until my mouth comes back to life. It is bright and sunny though, so looks good.

Hi All,
Just to let you all know ......you can barter with Ancestry ...LOL
I had an E-mail this morning reminding of my renewal next month, but FMP has been offering me a deal of £109 per year. So cheeky me rang Ancestry and said there's a recession on and I wont be renewing their subs of £155-40p World Wide......So I was shocked when the person on the phone said ....I'll see what I can do !!
I have now had it reduced to £116-55p.....How about that ? :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D...... £38-85p saving.
I also belong to two other paying web sites so I might try them next time .
So I'm sure you can ALL do the same and say your funds don't warrant your prices ....
I'm ever so chuffed
:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

I went out this morning I intended staying in and doing jobs. but it was so nice the sun was shinning . I wore a long skirt but had a light weight raincoat on. it was so windy walking across to the shops it took my breath away. but the sun made everything look so warm. At the moment we have a gale force wind blowing.
My sister arrived back from South Africa this morning at 7.15 she is full of the wonders of SA she said it was the best time to go as well, as the leaves were off the trees and you could spot all the animals, as the leaves didnt hide them.. I said what was the thing you will remember most of that holiday ? Ribben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, they were given a guided tour by one of the political prisoners. he told them what life had been like in there, he told then how they were released earlier because Nelson Mandela would not talk till all the political prisoners were released when he was. what a man he must be. takes alot to beat that.
Jean hope Scarlette is not coming down with anything ? so much in the way of illness now. Think I will sort something out for my dinner now. then do some jobs about the flat after dinner.

Hi everybody.
It's absolutely freezing here, strong winds but no rain............. yet.
Marilyn, one of my grandmother's brothers changed his surname, I know why, but I don't know what he changed it to.
Pleased you had a nice day Linda, your FIL will be pleased that people still care enough to celebrate with him.
Hope Scarlett isn't coming down with something, Jean.
Pat, I hope you have a very warm coat to take to Scotland with you.
Think I'd better look for a warm coat as well because I have to go out soon.

Morning !!!!!
Yep back to woollies.
I had to put away some summer clothes to make room for winter ones, I hate that job. Winter ones have now to be washed up nice and fresh so washing machine on all day !
Jab this afternoon.
I'm in the middle of tracing my friends tree and I was intrigued as to why one child was born in one name then got married in another !! Only to be told he changed his name ughh. its not so long ago so I'm digging deeper as to WHY ? Perhaps I'll never find out maybe the mother went off with another man !
Have a good day you all...........its not raining here ....very dry

Morning all Pauline had a lovely day yesterday with FIL. Had a lovely meal with him, my sister in law and the 2 of us. Then we had a bit of a walk. We went just into Oxfordshire to a village called Shabbington, also had a walk round a pretty little church. Back home really late after talking to Hubbys brother and wife through the evening.
Today is the dentists so I may not be back for a while.
Have a good day, its a bit calmer this morning than it was all night.

Pat, SNOW......Yes ! On the high tops in the far north west.
Tha Achray Hotel keeps sledges and dog teams at the ready all year just in case guests get snowed in. All the staff are trained to use them, so you should be safe enough if that happens. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Hello Maddie......at this time of the day I've usually been up for a couple of hours had a long lay in this morning......6.15am before I stirred.
Dark and miserable here, wind has gone down a bit , thank goodness.
Scientists have found out that waves off the Hebrides can be higher than 50ft. After a lot of expense and time to find that out......all they needed to do was ask the Islanders who live there. :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P
Catch you later......off to make the breakfast :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Morning All.
What a horrible night, it blew a gale. Still quite warm though, the cold will start to move in soon, I fear.
The bloke who founded Apple has died I saw on the news. Only in his 50's. He had pancreatic cancer. What a tragedy for such a talented man.
No other lights on in the street, am I the only silly begger up?
Have a good day everyone, keep well. :-)

Hello everyone.
I have had real trouble getting back on here. Not last night, nor this morning, this is the first time I have not got the Error Message.
Rita my flu jab was a combined one, flu, bird flu, and asian flu. No wonder I felt lousy.
Thank you for all your efforts Stephen. Behave yourself, please. ;-)
Hope everyone is well.
See's ya later. :-)

Pat, it was on our news that Scotland are due to get snow, especially in the highlands. Your new boots will come in very handy, but be sure to pack your balaclava, and scarf and gloves, just in case.
We have got the high winds at the moment, and this morning it was pouring with rain. Where has the summer weather of last week got to now, thats what I want to know.
Hope everyone is well. Love Mo xxx
