Deb, I am so glad you have set down ground rules in case Nutty comes back, how you can live with yourself tho is beyond me lol

O.h. has noticed Ratty seems to be about again, always seems to be alone so far, this is the second year, I first noticed him in Summer 2007 skipping across the lawn towards the food dropped off the bird table, didn't say anything for ages till o.h. found the holes under the shed and garage lol
He blocked them up and we tried to keep the bird food on the table and he put down the trap a ratcatcher left here a while back when we had rats, and all we find is a cosy nest of grass etc in one corner of the trap and the bait thrown all over the place, almost the way a cat will scrap cat litter about lol

Whilst I don't like the idea of rats doing their dirty deeds all over the place, I have to say this one was quite cute and smallish but I suppose by now he will be grown and maybe thinking of settling down and breeding if he finds a partner!
We did have a grey squirrel visit once to pinch the hazel nuts, the first crop, but haven't seen one since.

Well someone is up there!
I told hubby not to wrap his butties in a map :)

It is either him (thinking about squirrels travelling 6 miles in a night) or my little Peanut.

The trap is set and a tiny hole in one of the roof overhangs has been welded shut!

I think we have seen the last of our lodgers.

Squirrel number two - (don't have a name for him) was in the trap last night.

Brought him down from the attic and he was non too pleased! Hissing and spitting and making noises I've never heard a squirrel make before.

He was taken for a car ride to the a nice wooded are just up the road. His friend Nutty is up there too.

I just couldn't resist getting something I saw today for Hubby for Christmas.
An animated squirrel! He moves and makes three different noises. It comes with it's own birth certificate and baby bottle :)
I know what choice words will be said when he opens it on the 25th.

My daughter and I were thinking about putting it in the trap and sending the "Squirrel Huter" aka Hubby up to get it down. We had second thought as we are sure he would not be ammused.

So all is good (for now) in this part of the world :)

Ah...but just think how amused you and others would be if you sent Oh into the attic to find the animated squirrel....and the fun we will have reading about it.....where is your sense of daring?

Re: Nutty and friend....make that 180 descendants for the future excursion to the homeland :-))))

Deb Vancouver (18665) Report 5 Dec 2008 03:50

Ohhh Liz! It isn't Peanut.
Peanut wasn't a black squirrel, he was on the brownish side.

My sister and myself were sitting in the back yard during the summer. She mentioned that you never see baby squirrels. She had just "met" Nutty.

Low and behold the next day there was a teeny squirrel in the back yard. She came over later in the day via the yard. I stopped her and said "look at the compost". She looked at what she thought was a chipmonk. Nope, it was a Squirrel, We named him Peanut because he is so tiny.
Cute little thing. A little bugger too and cheeky!

Maybe Peanut will return next year to visit us. But how will I recognise him after he has grown?

We have had just about every kind of wildlife in our yard. Black bears, deer, raccoons, cayotes and of course squirrels. One of the nice things about living on the base of a mountain.

Our daughter and her friend were down at the river ( we are greenbelt to the river) a few years back and swore a cougar was on the opposit side of the river from where they were. Doesn't surprise me.

Glad that they weren't partial to poison and my way of catching them worked out fine!
