I've been meaning to say ... I hope my initials don't offend anyone ... If so, they'd have to have a word with Emily Murphy, who wrote the book. And she's dead.

Angie, you may not be way off ... loners trying to run with the pack ... it just may not work out. ;)

Heaven help us if we ever try to take catnip away from a cat...

I'm glad somebody does.

There's no rule that the person who makes up an allegory has to know what it's an allegory for, surely!

Like that poster campaign in Cuba: EMULACION!

Who/what are we emulating, I asked my English teacher date.

Er, we're just emulating, he said.

Hmm.

Uh oh. Could this be another allegory??

Don't ask me!

JaneyCanuck Report 24 Sep 2008 15:59

Well, if I were to emulate a certain person, I wouldn't be here long. ;)

It's one of those transitive verb thingies. You can't just emulate, you have to emulate something or someone -- you model your behaviour on them.

Emulating away on your own, or even in a group, well, I just thought that was weird. It seemed to be an exhortation to be Better! Faster! Stronger!, that sort of thing. To be like Che maybe.

So a few years later (I'm probably repeating my stories) I finally went to see the Cuban movie Death of a Bureaucrat, at a film festival back home here. This poor guy's father has died, and unfortunately all his ID got buried with him by accident. The widow can't claim her benefits, etc. So the son winds his way through the bureaucracy, trying to get a permit to exhume. He ends up doing it himself.

But at one point he walks out of a govt office, and there on the sidewalk is a drunk sitting on the pavement swigging out of a bottle of rum, and above his head on the wall is a big poster: EMULACION!

I burst out laughing. Of course nobody else got the joke, so I looked like a dork laughing at a drunk.

I have come to conclusion that Janey is very deep and very philisophical...fancy laughing at a tramp!
Im sure there is a bittersweet irony there somwhere!

Oh, sigh, Ophelia.

Shall I guess whom you're emulating? ;)

Oh this is all too deep for me.
I'm still trying to get my head round the Shrodinger cat conundrum/paradox.........which as a cat lover has always seemed pretty cruel to cats to me.

Welcome Back!

Oh, you're just showing me up. I only have a BA in philosophy. I suppose you need at least a master's to know about this Schroeder the cat comedy/parody.

All right then. What is it?
