I think journalists should use good English, it is,after all, a tool of the trade they are paid to carry on.

When Anita Roddick sadly died there was an article stating that she had contracted an illness at the time of the birth of her youngest daughter. She had two daughters so there was no youngest.

In the T.V listings it mentions the paintings of da Vinci. His name was Leonardo!

They are paid to write it properly!

Over here, the term "partner" is used by homosexual people who are living together or who have made a life-time commitment to each other.
The one expression that really got up my nose this summer while I was in England was, " Having said that". I wanted to say "Yes, I heard you the 1st time".

I cringe when I hear "the missus" and swearing, I think there are enough words in the dictionary without swearing.

Oooo another one I hate...

'touching base'

meaning, having a word with or letting someone know, or finding out from...

One of the managers at my place has just learned the phrase and is busy going round telling everyone to 'touch base' with everyone else. AARRRGGHHH

Heather, that is also one of my pet hates...people who cannot tell the difference between there, their and they're, and use 'there' all the time. And using 'of' instead of 'have', as in 'should have'. As far as I am concerned it is laziness, both in the use of our language and in the writing.

saying, for example ' at the end of the day, something needs to be done. For heavens sake, if something needs to be done, it needs to be done whether it is the end of the day, the middle of the day or the beginning of the day !! Also, and probably due to the fact that I am 'one of the older generation' the modern day speech which includes peeps for people (I always thought peeps indicated taking a discrete look at something), cool for 'up to date (always thought it referred to the temperature) and abbreviations to represent phrases IMHO for example. I realise this is probably used to cut down on the amount of typing when on the computer, but I still find it irritating. Oh what a moaning old soul I am !!

"Cheers"..............Why do people say that when they mean "Thank you." Cheers is what you say when you drink a toast. Are people afraid to say thanks these days?
