Hello everybody yes my brother and i use to go and pick rhubarb from fathers garden and dip in sugar,
also lettuce, strawberry's and cocoa with sugar this was in the late forties - fifties use to think it was lovely.
don't think i could eat lettuce with sugar now though.
Cocoa was messy end up with brown sticky fingers and choc round your mouth,
No wonder I'm a big girl all that sugar ha ha.
Regards to you all Gwen. UK

Me amd my siblings always ate rhubarb with sugar, in the early Fifties sweets were rationed so this was a treat!

I also loved Goosegogs (berries) blackcurrants etc.straight out of the garden....and was forever picking 'food' from the hedgerows on the way back from school! ...just rubbed them on my sleeve lol...I never suffered a thing :O)

Mom and Dad had, and still have an enormous rhubarb area...... we have many a shortage of toilet paper due to the 'sugar in a cup, and rhubarb stick'

I have tried lifting a bit of their plant, to put in my garden but it has not worked........

Used to eat Rhubarb this way often, but not allowed the sugar anymore. If you do get a root to start, remember not to pull any the first year as it will not come good if you do. It will not grow in some soils but is really hardy in most. Ihave a garden now where it will not grow as the soil is too new to gardening, having been a field until 30 yrs ago. Jean

Yes, shudder to think of it now, made some rhubarb, wine once, well lets just say laxative tablets weren't needed after 3 glasses were drunk, don't trust blackberries after making wine out of them as when i strained the liquid off there was grubs left in with the fruit pulp, never made home amde wine again.

My son [now 34] used to suck a dummy but one night going to bed it couldn't be found. In desperation I got some Rhubarb from the garden and he sucked that instead............I didn't put sugar on it though. He continued to suck rhubarb while it was in season and that was the end of the dummy
