It seems to be from all over the place then and not just Norfolk. Interesting.

I put a bit of sugar on tomatoes when I bake them - sliced - lovely.

I am Norfolk born and bred from a Norfolk woman and Bucks man, but this sort of rings a bell, altho not something my family did. My Mum had a really sweet tooth so she would have done it if she had known about it I am sure lol

I've never heard of lettuce with sugar, - I was brought up in Hampshire. but always thought it strange when a friend's mother gave us cut up tomatoes with sugar on, if I stayed there for tea.
She was from Manchester or thereabouts, I think.

I know someone from Sussex who puts sugar on her salad instead of salad cream or mayo etc

Hi Mau - that's a bit further away ... Was your mum a Norfolk woman by any chance?

Reminds me of the banana and sugar sandwiches one of my aunts used to make - they were totally yummy.

Hi Jill
Mam used to make us lettuce and sugar sandwiches for tea,we liked them, could possibly have been because sweets were on ration at the time.
We also ate very finely sliced apple in sandwiches too...delicious!
I was brought up in Northumberland.

Think this might be a regional "delicacy" ??

Years ago when I was a very small child my nan dipped lettuce into sugar to encourage me to eat it. I liked it at the time but could not face the idea now.

I mentioned this to a work colleague the other week and she said "Oh my mother in law does that - but she's from Norfolk."

The odd thing is that my nan's mother was from Norfolk so I was wondering - is this a Norfolk thing or does anyone else remember this / do this? And if so, what part of the country are you from?
