My son turned 21 and needed a passport .....no problems ..you would think .....

So he sent for this long birth certificate and ......filled in the form and sent it of ...

Three weeks later he got a letter

can we have your mums Marriage certificate to your dad .................
We rang the bloke and explained ...my mum is divorced !
So said the bloke get her to send it ......

Well anyone who gets divorced knows your marriage cert is take by the solicitor when you divorce ...

So I rang ...he said get me a copy of the marriage certificate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we did two weeks later he got the passport

No one seems to know why he wanted my certificate and WHY then did he accept a copy .....!

This carry on is madness what if my son and I didnt have contact anymore .......well guess that dont matter coz I got the certificate for £7.00 on the net!

When it come to OHMS you aint got no rights to any privacy about your life,,,,,,

the problems start when someone applies to get a copy of birth cert in their known name...of course there isnt one,,,!

Rox, I read it as birth cert OR adoption cert depending on whether yr adopted or not.

Uggers

Uggers Report 18 Apr 2008 13:41

Hi Sheila, according to the info on Bob's application form they haven't got the right to do that. I think it is criminal.

Kay, I haven't got one at the moment and if I had the spare dosh I would get one now.

So after 1982 you need the Original birth certificate,I wonder why it changed, there must be a reason.
I thought if it was recent it was due to fraud.

David.

They often now call first timers in for an interview or be seen in person,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,before they issue..........

Uggers Report 18 Apr 2008 13:40

I think the rules have changed since I first had a passport because I used a short birth (adoptive) certificate. I hadn't got my original birth cert at the time.

Hi

Think it is quite a new thing, never been asked to supply mine, though I know of a few people who did, can cause all sorts of problems tho, especially amongst older adoptee's as they may not know they where adopted :O(
I know of case where a person was asked for it , and when she phoned to queried and ask why they could not send her new passport out, they just presumed to she knew and told her they could not accept her short version of the adoption cert :O((

Rosi,

Your poor friend what a way to find out !!

Uggers

Uggers Report 18 Apr 2008 13:38

Jesus Rosi, that's awful for the kid. I know someone who was born in the early 40s and was raised by her father and stepmother and didn't know her stepmother wasn't her mum until she applied for a passport. She never forgave them:(

Thank you, Bob - I was certain they had no right to do that - I wonder if it's stupid clerks who don't understand there own procedure?

I have here a form for passport application..
Dated 2001
.apart from the usual preamble........paragraph 3 "check that you have ALL the documents needed for your application".
ALL first time applications require an ORIGINAL( not photocopy)of your birth certificate.

page 3 says
1. born OR adopted before 1 jan 1983.
birth OR adoption certificate.

if you were adopted in the uk between 1 jan 1950 and 31 december 1982...
your FULL adoption cert. showing names of adoptive parents, and evidence that the adoptive male parent was a british national..

My friends "daughter" applied for a passport a few years ago, and got the shock of her life as she had to provide her birth cert which was reluctantly given to her when she turned 18 after many excuses.

Her "Mum" was her older sister, and all of her 7 of her uncles and aunts were also her brothers and sisters, her "Grandad" was her real birth father as his name was on her birth cert.

Her mum died at birth and her sister had been only married only a few weeks so bought her up as her own.
All the brothers and sisters knew the secret and had been swarn to secrecy...

It caused a huge rift in the family, her brother and sister (her mums other children) was really her niece & nephew.....

Uggers Report 18 Apr 2008 13:33

I don't think my friend will, Rox but I think I will contact the passport offices.

Roxanne Report 18 Apr 2008 13:32

I think If it was me,David,I would certainly me making a stink about it, it doesn't seem right.

Uggers

Uggers Report 18 Apr 2008 13:31

It seems to be indiscriminate then, Kay - I think I had my first passport around 1989/90.

Uggers

Uggers Report 18 Apr 2008 13:30

Rox, it looks like it must be hit and miss as opposed to a recent thing if Kay's husband had to supply his.

Jeanette, there is a word on the tip of my fingers and it ain't 'mwah':))))

I do that sort of thing, Kate. It's no-one else's business which is why I am so angry that this lad was forced to get his cert which he had never seen and that other people were privy to his birth identity.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 18 Apr 2008 13:30

My oh had to send his original back in 1990,,,

,so I just assumed it was normal procedure......

I do think its a invasion of privacy.........and shouldnt be allowed,,,,,,,,,

why as been said that person in said name no longer exsists,,,

maybe its all this fraud stuff,,,?
