Jesus Rosi, that's awful for the kid. I know someone who was born in the early 40s and was raised by her father and stepmother and didn't know her stepmother wasn't her mum until she applied for a passport. She never forgave them:(

Thank you, Bob - I was certain they had no right to do that - I wonder if it's stupid clerks who don't understand there own procedure?

Hi

Think it is quite a new thing, never been asked to supply mine, though I know of a few people who did, can cause all sorts of problems tho, especially amongst older adoptee's as they may not know they where adopted :O(
I know of case where a person was asked for it , and when she phoned to queried and ask why they could not send her new passport out, they just presumed to she knew and told her they could not accept her short version of the adoption cert :O((

Rosi,

Your poor friend what a way to find out !!

I think the rules have changed since I first had a passport because I used a short birth (adoptive) certificate. I hadn't got my original birth cert at the time.

They often now call first timers in for an interview or be seen in person,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,before they issue..........

So after 1982 you need the Original birth certificate,I wonder why it changed, there must be a reason.
I thought if it was recent it was due to fraud.

Hi Sheila, according to the info on Bob's application form they haven't got the right to do that. I think it is criminal.

Kay, I haven't got one at the moment and if I had the spare dosh I would get one now.

When it come to OHMS you aint got no rights to any privacy about your life,,,,,,

the problems start when someone applies to get a copy of birth cert in their known name...of course there isnt one,,,!

My son turned 21 and needed a passport .....no problems ..you would think .....

So he sent for this long birth certificate and ......filled in the form and sent it of ...

Three weeks later he got a letter

can we have your mums Marriage certificate to your dad .................
We rang the bloke and explained ...my mum is divorced !
So said the bloke get her to send it ......

Well anyone who gets divorced knows your marriage cert is take by the solicitor when you divorce ...

So I rang ...he said get me a copy of the marriage certificate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we did two weeks later he got the passport

No one seems to know why he wanted my certificate and WHY then did he accept a copy .....!

This carry on is madness what if my son and I didnt have contact anymore .......well guess that dont matter coz I got the certificate for £7.00 on the net!

Hi Uggers

Do not think it was done on purpose this person just presumed that she knew she was adopted, it could easily have been I did not know till I was 30 and had only a short cert......
Who was it on here that went for a job interview and was asked to produce a copy of their adoption cert to personell ?, thought that was disgusting.
Maybe it has a lot to do with fraud not though :O/

Thanks everyone for your replies. I am going to contact them when I get some time. They have absolutely no right to do this - and there are complications with my friend's son's circumstances that I can't go into but it's made a sensitive issue much more difficult.

Silly Sausage Report 18 Apr 2008 17:32

I know this is a silly question..but what if the person has no intention of ever applying for their orginal birth cert as they have no interest in tracing birth parents..does this then mean they have to ?

Also when you get married you are asked to put the name of your natural Father ...if you are adopted does this mean your birthfather or adopted father ? ( nothing to do with passports just asking )...

Uggers

Uggers Report 18 Apr 2008 17:35

Yes, this would force them to apply for their original birth cert.

When adoptees get married, they put their adoptive fathers names down because, apart from anything else, they are their legal fathers.

ok Thank you

Kay????

Kay???? Report 18 Apr 2008 17:40

Hayley,~~~~~~

The father on a marriage certificate of anyone adopted will be the adoptive parent in normal circumstances ,,,that is in the eyes of the law is who is the parent and as it should be,,,,
