Ann, I know you don't like it but if you can just watch for 3 or 4 minutes you will see horses fall, jockeys being thrown off, as happens in steeplechasing. Then a curious thing happens, the riderless horses continue to run and jump the fences, they absolutely love it ! They are certainly not forced to continue, they enjoy this chance to gallop and jump, it is what thoroughbred horses do.

It is in no way comparable to cock fighting, badger baiting, (dare I say it?) fox hunting, etc....

But I respect your opinion Ann.

ps. Have a bob or two on McKelvey, (each way).

I think we get the message, Ann:-)

go for it if you want to I say, I'm certainly not having a go at anyone for doing so, just pointing out that the best bet is a dead horse or two!!!!!

Don't want to spoil anyone's fun, really I don't, even if it doesn't sound like it!!!!

It depends on the odds that you have when you place the bet. I've placed a £2 bet on Simon at odds of 12/1 If it wins I'll get £34. if it comes 2nd,3rd,or 4th I'll get £8.

LancsLass Report 5 Apr 2008 11:33

You get your stake back plus whatever the odds are at the time of betting.

Can't always work it out myself, but a £1 EW bet on a favourite and £1 EW bet on an outsider adds to the fun!!

Sorry Anne didn't mean to be insensitive. The funs is the betting and yes I always hope every year they make it without any injuries or deaths

No probs with your comments Ann, Everyone has their own feelings about the race. If we all liked the same thing the world would be a boring place.

Cheers Helen, what would the win be if your horse came first?

don't wish to offend anyone here but I cannot even watch it - all those beautiful horses and you can bet your bottom dollar that at least one, if not many more, will end up dead!! Sorry to bring a downer to the thread, but just the way I feel. Know I'm probably very much in the minority here

Caz do you have a Ladbrokes near you, They are very helpful and will have people who are queue helpers if you're unsure.

In our sweep at work I've drawn Chelsea Harbour.

Hope I haven't put a jinx on it!

LancsLass Report 5 Apr 2008 11:26

Each way bet gives you a pay out if your horse is in top 4. (so if you want to put a £1 on a horse you have to pay £2 for an each way bet)

Money on the nose gives you a pay out on winner only.

The time I spent with my old dad on Grand national day really paid off!

Willow Report 5 Apr 2008 11:26

I put bets on:

Compy or Die
Bewleys Berry
D'Argent

all to win

ButtercupFields

ButtercupFields Report 5 Apr 2008 11:25

Caz you have plenty of time to put your bet on as the Big Race is about 4pm. On the National, it is usually better to bet each way:-) Good Luck! BC XX
