My husband goes to a computer club in a school, and said there are rats running around the playground, where the kids keep dropping their food.

I laughed- because he said 'They are beautiful rats' , as if they were pets, and not vermin lol

Hes back! eek but not happy as no bird seed for him to eat, sat on the lawn for a bit then scurried back into the bushes

No sightings since yesterday and no sign of rat runs on the lawns or holes for their nests, but across the road at the back there is a railway embankment and then open fields so wonder if he came from over there, if he did hopefully he will get squished crossing the road! OH won't go out into the garden now and had the wobbles when I told her about our furry neighbour. Will keep our eyes open and stop feeding the birds see if that does the trick. If not it will have to be the pest control man!

Years ago I had an aviary. When I changed my birds food always put left over seed on bird table for wild birds. I then got a rat feeding under the bird table. I called the rat man & I had to stop putting the seed out for the wild birds. He told me that if you put poison down, then the rats have access to sunflower seeds, which they had, they (sunflower seeds) are an antidote to the poison. I think it is vit. K5 that is in them. He told me that as long as they had access to the sunflower seeds the poison would'nt work.

Our local paper had a thing in about still feeding the birds this cold weather to help them survive.
Colin, maybe our ratty has moved to your area, he hasn't been around for at least a month or more, we would know as any bird food dropped stays where it is till the birds come back for it, whereas before he would be seen hop skipping and jumping across the grass back to his hidey holes, sometimes tripping over the piece of ham fat or whatever if it was a longish bit. He was really funny to watch. O.h. put poison in a trap we had when we had rats before but all he did was scoop soil into it to cover the poison lol He made lots of holes under the shed which o.h. kept filling up with stones and nasty things and blocking off the areas. He was quite cute actually considering I hate rats, and I had been watching him for about six months, didn't tell o.h. at first till he spotted him one day.

You aint just feeding the birds mate ! Birds dont need feeding in this weather there is plenty of natural food about.

Jackie Report 19 Mar 2008 00:20

We live in the country, near the railway line and opposite a grain store, rats here are a permenant problem, Look for rat runs on grass areas, they are usually quite easy to spot, they run in lines and usually look a different colour in the grass. They do like nice soft soil check flower beds for holes. You can now get a bait that only kills mice and rats, so it's safer than the old types. If you put the bait in plastic bags and tie with a knot, then stuff it down all rats holes you find and then cover them with stones if you must. These should be checked daily and if the bait has gone put some more down, I have had to do this up to 25 times, believe me you will have a lot more than 1!
