btw I love weeping willows and had one planted in our front garden....it was lovely until I noticed the paving slabs lifting by the front door........had a look and it was roots....

.....we got the tree surgeon in who said the roots would make for the nearest source of water.......and.......it was planted with the main drain only 6 foot underneath it......and our downstairs toilet had a big root heading under the foundations towards it......

I cried when that tree came down, because although we have a big front garden, on a hill and had it planted 8 foot from the front, he explained how far the roots grew each year and they would go for water.......still miss my tree though.....

Off to clean my out side windows and rant at passerbys about the evil of willow trees.....lol

Sally... I loved the tree too... there is something about them, isn't there?

But the entire streets water/sewage system is in my garden... within 3 feet of the bally thing, lol!!! We have.... wait for it.. 19 drains on our property!!

Oh... and said neighbour has gone straight out and planted another one on his side of the fence in the same spot..... am not sure what to do about it... I think it is reportable as there are so many water thingies in the area, but I need to wait for the leaf cover to start so that I can tell ,, but the really vicious nasty bit of me is very aware that it has been planted right next to his beloved coy carp pond.. and his father-in-law was head of the parks works division for many years before he retired... so they are well aware of the problems they are facing.

I had the same problem with my neighbour in my previous house Hayley.

She had a whacking great Weeping Willow in her garden and not only was it making all the slats on my patio come up - I was also allergic to it at certain times of year.... must have been when the sap was at it highest......and it gave me nettle rash which I had to be hospitalised for a couple of times.

She refused to deal with the problem of the tree and we took it upon ourselves to cut down any branches over hanging our garden. We chucked them back over her fence. She wasn't impressed. But tough.

I never did resolve the issue though I did warn the new owners about it.........as I thought it only fair. They were a very aggressive mouthy couple so I'm guessing they wll have dealt with it less subtlely than us lol. You have my sympathies those trees are lovely by a river but not in a suburban area xx

If its spoiling your enjoyment of your garden and possibly going to undermine the foundations of your home,I would think you have adequate reason to have the tree cut down,at either the owners expense or make a claim on their Insurance for any damage to your property.I love trees and have many in my garden,however if they caused that sort of trouble to my neigbours I would have them removed.**M**.

Hayley you are within your rights as someone else said to cut down anything that overhangs into your garden and throw it back over the wall.

I have a laburnham tree that I cut back each year so it dosent spread over my washing let alone the neighbours.

Both neighbours have Plants that hang over into my garden and I cut them back several times a year - although I dont throw the bits over the fence as I have good neighbours.

There is a self seeded tree though that belongs to none of us grown in the alley between out houses and the council wont do anything its about 15 foot high.

I heard that an aptly placed copper nail will kill a tree ..........

Oh Hayley, the neighbour won't have a clue what hit 'em when you have one of your hissy fits. Will we get to see you on the next series of neighbours from hell...or will it be ASBO Fever - when trees go mad? PMSL

Everyone else has said about your rights. Might be worth seeking advice from the council and maybe CAB so that you've all your ducks in a row so to speak :-)

We had three huge trees at the end of our garden and my brother took them down (he was quite the monkey back in his twenties) and the roots were killed by pouring stuff into holes (think it was tar or bitchumen or something). Taking them down was the best thing we ever did, got back about 10 feet of garden.

I have been pacing round the garden as she will have to say something ......as I have said I think in the past as I wanted to keep the peace I ignored her rantings.....

so want to say to her....

Tree surgeons are pretty pricey too !!!

At our first house we had an old oak tree that had a preservation order on it and we had to apply to have the branches reduced.

We were given a list of *approved* surgeons and it cost us hundreds of pounds.

I hope she digs deep... those trees are a menace and if she insists on preserving hers despite the fact that they cause structual damage then more fool her and her insurance company !!! xx

If I can remember, and OH says it is right......when these trees went up there was a suggestion to wait until they went out and to drill a hole in the base of the tree and insert copper sulphate and that would gradually kill them.......but if it were one tree, OK, but a whole row of them would be very suspicious......and they would not do it anyway....

I am the same as Merlin, love trees and planted a few, not thinking that they spread as well as grow......I take more care now.....

Just remembered and had to add that we had a lovely Aspen tree, but planted it too close to the wall, and as the trunk grew it was gradually pushing the wall out......so I had to lose that one too........all through not thinking when we first planted them.....

Next door (I only have one neighbour) has honeysuckle which grows over the fence, their garden is really lovely......and I am going to ask her for a cutting to put along the back wall......it smells wonderful when in bloom.....

Hayley I have just seen this and was coming on to tell you ... but Maddie got there first.

You have every right to cut it back on your side if it is interfering with your enjoyment of your garden.... but you must give all the bits back to your neighbour.

I am not or have never been interested in gardening....dont know a pansy from a tulip...well I do....BUT really wanted to redesign my back garden this year....not do any of the work...but supervise..as I said even my hanging baskets dont surive because of it....am really peed off.....

Sally we had the most beautiful Honeysuckle... the smell was amazing.
It grew along the fence and over the shed, Where OH had trailed it.

We had new neighbours over the fence... nice little family.... but his idea of clearing his garden was to drench it in WEED KILLER!!
And our lovely Honey suckle died...
I don't think it was a deliberate act of vandalism, but it was pure stupidity.
