The thing that really annoys me was the wedding we went to last year....we stayed over 2 nights ...the cost of that and present and everything ...coz abit and the night before my 40th she text me and said can't make it tomorrow gotta work...thats the last and final time I ever make the effort for any of his family...

lmao cheeky mare wasn't she?

Maddie, with breakfast, those sound like good room rates and I do understand about wanting to accommodate people easily. I agree with the sentiment of only spending what you can afford/what you have. Can't understand people getting into heavy debt for it.

Brother got married for second time in south africa when they went on holiday, it was all planned as they all had their wedding outfits, my mother was very upset.

PMPL Hayey - as I said last week I was going to see how hard it was to crash a party there!

I have my outfit already - all Ive got to do is loose weight on the bust and hips - so have me Hula Hoop looking on at me and I keep saying tomorrow.

Well we been putting it off for a few years and almost did the Gretna Green but our parents are old and we started to worry about time running out, also last two years we have been busy with huge extension project on house ..... In the end we decided we not going down the 17k Wedding route - If we got it in the bank we can spend it but if not - no!

But would like somewhere our freinds and family can travel to have a great time and a party and be able to stay over if they have travelled far at a reasonable rate.

This ticks all the boxes.

Oh I have got fantastic rates on the rooms! Wedding suit free single rooms £45.00, doubles for £55.00 and Family for £55.00 + £5.00 per child - thats whats swinging up paying more the buffet - and Ive been to look at the rooms and they are v nice - not fancy but v good value for money and full breakfast thrown in for that.

Yep what you want ....coz your only s'pose to do this once....I meant 6 weeks we planned our in 4 mum and sister paid for food cake room and flowers disco...

We went to a wedding last year . They had invited over 350 people no way was the room be big enough...talk about done on the cheap...we stayed at the place the wedding was...never again.....the brides sister left a message that she was looking for someone to dress the room on the morning of th wedding volenteers of people staying there...

we went to church for the wedding pics and so and all headed back for the party....all but the bride and groom....this was about 3.15pm....we got back to the room and it was anounced that the happy couple would arrive about 5.30 by helicopter...at 5pm we served a buffet...(Just ) then came on an the couple arrived.....disco and the at 7.30 an Irish band who sang IRA folk songs I wasnt inpressed... by 10pm the guests were straving..NO food ....people were sending out for pizzas....we went for a curry and then went back to our room after by that time it was midnight..

The following morning we ate breakfast and I just wanted to get back home...the bride and groom arrived ( the first time they had spoken to us since we got there on the Friday night ) and I just said hiya we are off now....she said I was hoping you would stay and met up with everyone today...for the day...I said I have been here since Friday I have to get home...never again..

Ah Maddie, don't you hate it when that happens. I see what you mean about the valentines surge (so to speak) I think it's better/cheaper to get married in the winter months as less people want the slots.

You should find out if you can get group discount on the rooms you book too. I was watching that "don't get done get dom" and he reckons you can barter on just about anything. We saved £50 on the carpets for mum and dad's new bungalow by me telling mum to ask if there was a discount for cash lol. She'd never have thought of it. And now I'm gonna go to furniture store and see if I can get a deal on the table and chairs that they wanted. Think I can get them down from £199 to £150? lol.

That was my sentiment too summer scribe - but they pointed out in there contract minimum head count.

Makes me laugh we can have wedding breakfst and no buffet so they loose just under a grand - or with Buffet but for twice the amount we want!

Trouble is dates getting booked what with Valentines just having been - Ive already had to change the time of the wedding as someone got there today before me with cheque even though was pencilled in.

~Summer Scribe~ Report 21 Feb 2008 22:24

Always barter and who are they to tell you how many they're gonna do the buffet for? If you want 40 you get it for 40! People always back out at last minute and as you say, people pick and if they've just had a meal at 6 they're not gonna be so hungry. Tell 'em exactly what you want and if they won't do it, tell em you'll find somewhere that will give you what you want.

I'm loathed to do a full Buffet for 80 guests at 8pm when 45 of them are having a sit down meal at 6PM - but hotel have come down to buffet for 60. Ive never seen a buffet finished and personally would rather have catered for 40 as no one really eats a buffet at a wedding they just pick and would have been less waste and expense.
