Hi Roxanne, I am not going to ask a lady's age but the passing of the years has a lot to do with it.
I was 65, did not smoke, drank very little, (odd beer or glass of wine socially), never ate fried foods or fat and I exercised regularly. But a blood test showed I had high chloreserol.
I was put on a low dose statin and everything has been fine since then, my statin levels are about 4 - 4.5 which my doc is happy with. Evidently the age of 50 is when these high levels begin to occur.

Even if you are only 21 - Go and see your doctor.

ps. The only drawback to taking statins is that you must not eat grapefruit, and I love them but heyho, i also want to live.

Good luck.

Liz, I eat rolled oats for breakfast and for desert with low fat milk and it didnt lower mine. I was also adding a tbsp of oat bran to it, but no go.

Now I am on the tablets, dont know if it has lowered the cholesterol as havent been tested lately, but I felt I had to do something so I could care for my OH as his Alzheimers gets worse.

My bro-in-law had a reading in double figures and had a heart attack, or was it a stroke? He now exercises more and has lost some weight.

Huia.

Your GP should give you a list of do and don't eats to help. I take some natural tablets which seem to help "Red Yeast Rice & Gugulipid" tablets are available from herbal shops.

I think porridge oats help lower cholestrol so might be worth adding to your diets if you don't already eat them.

My doctor told me I had high cholesterol and took a novel approach-
Instead of giving me drugs (that made me sick as a dog last time I took them), he gave me thyroid hormones to speed up my thyroid gland (which burns up the chol faster).
Fantastic! I feel 20 years younger!
I eat more - but still loose weight!
I sleep less - but never feel tired!
I feel like chasing girls again - lol!

Everyone in my immediate family have high cholestorel...except me. But then I'm the youngest so there's time yet. When mum was diagnosed it was recommended that me and siblings were tested. mine was 3.6 I was told to stop bragging as everyone else's was well over the accepted limit of 5. Now they're on medications for it as diet control didn't work. I do think there is a major hereditary factor with it, or perhaps it's just to do with age.

Just had mine checked yesterday as heart disease and high cholesterol runs in the family. Last time it was 5.1 - about 4 years ago. I expect it has gone up so may need statins. I think it's what you've inherited from your parents and it's just a case of reducing the risks.
My Mam didn't know she had high cholesterol until she had a massive heart attack when she was 50. She survived and is still going 13 years later. I want to avoid the same so am meeting the problem head on.

Plus of course Rox - there is good cholestrol and bad cholestrol - oiy vey! how are we to know which one is which?

Give up worrying, otherwise your blood pressure will increase, and that's bad for you too.

The largest proportian of cholesterol is manufactured by the liver and there is diddly squat you can do to reduce it. diet, pro-biotic drinks and spreads and yoghurts will not reduce the levels of cholesterol that your liver produces...end of story.....

..and why worry Cholesterol isn't something new....just something new that they have given us to worry about

Jac Report 5 Feb 2008 18:59

Hi Rox - My chol.level is 4.8 (just under 5) and was told that this was perfectly acceptable. However, my blood pressure was very high, and this is now being controlled by one tablet a day and is down to a normal reading.

I think the chol.thing can be based on the hereditary factor and as long as you are eating healthily, taking exercise etc. then I dont think you have too much to worry about frankly.

Hi Julie,In mine too.
My Mum has high cholestrol and my Dad did too.
Infact Mums had treatment for blocked arteries, she had to have an operation to widen the arteries.

stan, I dont think a stone in 9 years is bad, personally.

It does make you think how much is down to our genes, doesnt it??
