Here's a topic I've not seen on here before. I'm looking through service records to find one of my guys and found someone I thought was him (I realised half way through that it wasn't but by that time I was hooked lol) He has quite the write up for misdemeanors, most of which involve going absent for a few hours without permission (I suspect he was sneaking off to see his wife or something), some of which are ridiculously short times like 16minutes, or disobeying an order.

The punishments vary and say things like 3 days CB and 7 days CB. One looks like it says and x days LB. So anyone know what these codes stand for?

i am guessing that CB might be 'confined to barracks' ?

You weren't looking at my GG grandfathers record were you? LOL
He had pages and pages of punishments. I think CB stands for confined to barracks. Not sure about the LB though.

He was a home serving gunner. He seems like he was a right one, but to be fair nitpicking over 15,18 & 20 minutes seems a bit ridiculous.

Had another look and the LB might be FB.

Ihave have my dad absent with a.w.l from 0100 to 1600 ,forfeit 6 days pay and then put in prison,he was in Auatralian imperial forces that was in 1917 i downloaded all his records which its nice to keep

When I received my father's service record for WW1, I found he had been charged for 'falling out of line of march' and docked 7 days pay. The next day, on the records, it shows he was hospitalised with malaria. Seems a little unjust to me!

CB is definately "confined to barracks" been there done that.

I find it interesting that being a bit late was described as nit picking, but this is what Army discipline is all about, without discipline you dont have an efficient fighting unit, the rules were there to be obeyed ignore them at your peril.In some respects this is whats wrong with some people in todays society no discipline, and no responsilibility for their own actions

Just asked husband,he was in the army and says
x days LB might possibly be Late Back

He agrees with George and Colin,discipline is extremely important when you're in the forces! that's sadly lacking in schools today!

George I remember throwing a potato away when I was at HMS Mercury in the early 1980's and the PO chef asked me why I was throwing it in the waste.

I replied ''don't want it PO''
''shouldn't have picked it if you didn't want it'' he retorted.
My reply?
''thought it was cooked when I picked it PO''
major major mistake...spent 6 hours on my hands and knees scrubbing the galley floor with a nail brush!!! as you say happy days

Ok so I accept that discipline is important in the armed forces, but you just know there are those that got away with it while the same sergeant seems to have had it in for him lol. I'm not particularly bothered as he wasn't my ancestor in the end but it did make for interesting reading. Interestingly, he was transferred and never had another write up after that. So it does make you wonder. I hope someone claims him as he seems quite a jack the lad. I bet he was sneaking out to see his babies and wife.

We had a saying in the navy ''if your'e aint breaking the rules, you ain't trying hard enough''.....bet the documents made for interesting reading though

Colin, they were very interesting, built up quite a picture, just the sort of thing you need in this hobby...if only he'd been mine lol. Unfortunately, I'm still looking for mine, doesn't appear to have served. I've got help from Sue now though so maybe together we'll crack it.

I was lucky enough to find my grandfathers naval records and his coastguard records as well as news cuttings about him...I was thrilled

Perhaps we should have a military dit thread...the stories would make for some good light hearted reading....might have to clean some of the dits up though!

My father was in the navy and was punished for "Sticking a senior Officer".

I think this means punching but for the other misdemenours he was variously docked wages and demoted.

"causing a disturbance" and "awol" for example.

Also I was told he did time in a Jamaican gaol but how would I find out about that?

lol I'm loving these stories. My dad tells his army stories but he's so long winded that I tend to shut off lol. I should get him to write them down.
