Thanks for that Elisabeth.

Graham As I understand it, they are only in the normal death index if they had taken a breath, i.e. not stillborn. In those cases there ought to be a birth recorded too. I suppose there could have been different rules many years ago but as far as mine is concerned there is just the one special entry, and a specific Stillbirth Certificate. Elisabeth

For what it's worth there are numerous entries in the death index under a surname with either Male or Female given as the forename and an Age at Death of 0 given. I am presuming that these would be stillborn. I would hazard a guess that as they hadn't been born alive they would not appear in the births index at all. Graham

To bring everyone up to date. There is a different register for stillbirths, not on 1837. The local office for the registration could not help as all registers have to be sent to GRO when complete. I have now got the certificate I was looking for. There is a special form and I had to apply by post. The form seemed to be for applications from parents or siblings, not others. Elisabeth

When I eventually discivered my g gfathers birth there was a time on it- indicating a multiple birth. That was in 1844. No other birth was registered at the time. His older brother had twins later - so did his nephew - so maybe his twin was stillborn. I am mourning a babe I am not sure existed. Rosi Colch. ESS

Ive just spoken to my Mum and she said she was only issued with a 'certificate of disposal', even though the baby was born alive, they still classed him as a stillbirth. No birth or death records.

I don't think still births were registered until about 1927, until you get the certificate you wont know, even that may not say it was a still birth.

Out of interest, what did the article say?

Elisabeth

Elisabeth Report 4 Jul 2003 21:14

Lynne, Thanks for the offer. It was the article in the magazine that started a discussion with my husband. I shall contact the Registrars locally to ask them on Monday. Elisabeth

Would stillbirth registrations appear in the 1837 site? Would they be shown in both the birth and death entries or is there a different list somewhere?
