Hi Sue, It may have started as a shortened version of other names, but Ella can also be a name in it's own right. I have two in my family from 150 years ago! It's a very popular name again now--probably due to 'E.R' as one of the docs named their little girl Ella. Hope this helps. |

It may appear sort of posh, but there is Arabella as well. Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham. |

Hi Ella ....The name was probably originally a short form of any of various compound names containing the element 'ali' other, foreign (Eleanor and Elvira). It is now often taken to be a variant or pet form of Ellen. Hope you find her Leigh |

My great aunt was born, we think, in North Dakota, USA in about 1900. She died of TB about 1910 in Canada (Saskatchewan?). I have a photo of her, with her father and 4 brothers taken just before she died. My aunt tells me her name was Ella Kilpatrick, but I can find no trace of her, either her birth or death. Could Ella be short for anything? Any suggestions, please? Sue |
