What could Ella be short for?

Hi Sue, It may have started as a shortened version of other names, but Ella can also be a name in it's own right. I have two in my family from 150 years ago! It's a very popular name again now--probably due to 'E.R' as one of the docs named their little girl Ella. Hope this helps.

Hi Ella ....The name was probably originally a short form of any of various compound names containing the element 'ali' other, foreign (Eleanor and Elvira). It is now often taken to be a variant or pet form of Ellen. Hope you find her Leigh

My great aunt was born, we think, in North Dakota, USA in about 1900. She died of TB about 1910 in Canada (Saskatchewan?). I have a photo of her, with her father and 4 brothers taken just before she died. My aunt tells me her name was Ella Kilpatrick, but I can find no trace of her, either her birth or death. Could Ella be short for anything? Any suggestions, please? Sue
