Thanks for your email Janet. These threads disappear so quickly, I might not have seen your reply. I did go on tha pro-gov website (I googled pro-gov and found it that way) It is really good, the way you can browse on line first to see if they have what you need. Also I will try to get up to London to see the exhibition, it does look very interesting. I do know it will take more than a day to do my bits at Kew. I am lucky, that I dont live too far away (I'm in North Hampshire) it's just finding the time, and maybe a travelling companion, as I hate going anywhere like that on the train on my own. Sandra There is just one other thought. It is the 150 anniversary of the Crimea War in September 04 and to mark this the National Army Museum in London is putting on a special exhibition which is running from 3 October 04 to 31 March 05. It looks very interesting. You can run off the details from their website: http://www.national-army-museum.ac.uk/pages/news.html You may want to incorporate the two in one visit to London but do put aside a day for each place at least, preferably 2 days at Kew. I have also just noticed that National Archives have changed their web address from: www.pro.gov to www.nationalarchives.gov.uk There is a long article about this in "Ancestors" September 04. Thanks Janet I'll have a look on the website I do plan to get to Kew sometime soon, (then again I did say that to myself a few months back) but what with the children still off and work etc, it's quite a juggling act! I need to get up there anyway to get some info on my paternal g-grandfather, so now I will be able to kill two birds with one stone. Sandra

Many of those who fought in the Crimea War also went on to help put down the Indian Mutiny in 1857. British Forces were also in Ireland, particularly during the troubled times and these times were quite considerable in number! Sandra There is a possibility that your ancestor fought in the Crimea but you would need to know when he joined the army. The National Archives at Kew have all the details of many soldiers right through to the First World War to include the Crimea and all the other wars. Try the website ww.pro.gov. This will give some idea as to what you can obtain there. I have certainly all the details of my soldier ancestor researched through the NA to include his attestation papers which gave me info on where he was born the date he joined and the date he left the army as well as a brief resume of his army career which did also include the Crimea War as well as the medals he won at the Crimea. I then had to research the muster lists to get all the details of where he was at various times. It is well worth a visit to the NA to do this research. Janet

Thanks Helen - Nell, for putting the list up, I did wonder when the Crimean War was. Hopefully you may be able to answer this question for me? How would I find out if my G-G-Grandfather was in the Crimean war? Do you know of any sites I could try? His name was Thomas Lacey b18/12/1836 in Carlow, Ireland. He joined the British Army, in the 1871 census he was living in Colchester Barracks. He was a Farrier (private) in the 2nd Dragoons. Thats all I have on him. Being in the Army, his children were born in diffrent place's. His eldest in 1872, in Brighton, Sussex, then 1874 in Bury, Lancs, and then 1876, in Plaistow, East London. Where the family were still living in the 1881 and 1891 census. Thomas died 23/12/1890 and was buried 1/1/1890 in the East London Cemetery, Plaistow. Thanks Sandra
