I searched and searched for a relation on the census on ancestry with the name LAMB - eventually found her on another census so decide to look for a brother and sister for her. Her father, mother and brother were transcribed as LAMB but the person I was looking for, her sister and another brother were transcribed as LUMB - all at the same address!!! |

Hey, just found a lovely one, beats Somalia (Somerset) as birthplace - I was looking for an ancestor and came across this place of birth: Lunatie Jumates. You work it out! |

Richard - but why were you looking them up!??? Youre not the sort of boy who used to look through the dictionary for rude words at school are you? Love them though! |

Prize for the most unfortunate mistranscription would have to go to: Shepherd, Mary Ann 20 F**king, Sussex Servant or maybe... Phillips, Joseph 46 F**kingwide, Cornwall or even... Steel, John M 42 F**kam, Middlesex |

My Sartains are down as "Larhn" on the 1881, and my Sugdens were "Layden" in1891. There's even people who were born on Saturn, Neptune & the Moon on the 1891 (try them in the country box!!!)... But, the prize for the least useful place of birth would have to go to (again on the 1891) .... Powell, Elizabeth 19 "Hos uo idea" I think that the transcriber "hos uo idea" either LOL!!! Richard |

Hi all My Stratton has been transcribed at Watton. Took soooo long to find it because they won't let you put a wildcard at the start. *SIGH* Lynne |

Twinkle - I would guess that the enumerator was copying what the family had written! |

Yes, I had a "woisherwoman" in an 1851 for a Norfolk village. But I bet all the other villagers were well impressed by the guy! |

The best one I found wasn't a transcription error. The enumerator clearly wasn't literate as he had written down Jerimya, Harret and Lueza for Jeremiah, Harriet and Louisa! |

Yeh I know what you mean. On the 1881 census I looked for my Raisbeck gt grandparents. They were mis transcribed as Raisbrek. Luckily I knew who they lived next to, so found them that way. |
