Does anybody know if Molly would be used instead of the full proper name. I am trying to find a birth and marriage registration for her but she doesnt seem to exist when I know she does. Any help appreciated. Nicky

Molly can be used as a name in its own right, but I think originally it was a pet name for Mary. nell

Hi Keith, I have Molly Pountney born Birmingham mothers maiden name Lydeard. The oldest child was born in 1911 and I have searched right through to 1940's. I was told that she was one of the youngest. I have found a Margaret which nobody knows anything about so I presumed she died as a child. She was one of the earlier children though. Nicky

My mother was born Molly and my girl is Molly - no other name, so it is a name in its own right. My mother was born 1928.

Thanks everyone. Still confused as to when she was actually born. I will have to see if anyone else in her family remembers anymore details. Thanks Nicky

Hi My nan and aunty are both known as Molly but are in fact both Mary's. It is common in ireland to change your name from Mary to Molly if there are already Mary's in the family.

Nicholas where have you found ref to this molly?

Carol Report 26 Jul 2005 20:46

Molly could also have been her middle name. Many of my family members were only known by their middle names so worth bearing that in mind too! Good luck, Carol

My Mum was named Mollie just because my Grandad liked the name. I don't know where he got it from - there are no others in the family that I have found. Sue xx
