I have found a Charles Walsh on an unassisted passage passenger list of his arrival in Australia on the Marpesia he was only 16 in 1880 and by all accounts travelling alone is there a site now that I would able to find him leaving England that would give me any more details as I only know his fathers name his marriage cert which i have does not list his mothers name nor does his death cert. I need helpful advice to find if the one Richard found is indeed my Charles and when he left England was his mothers name written anywhere please lara xx |

Lara What was his wife's name? Also, do you know what state he settled in? You may then be able to find his marriage cert in Australia, and this would have details of both his parents names, as well as his town of birth. Found one possible Charles of the right age in Liverpool, 1871, with father Patrick: Patrick Walsh 30 Ireland Head Ann Walsh 28 Ireland Wife Charles Walsh 8 Ireland Son Eliza Walsh 4 Liverpool Daughter Christina F Walsh 3 months Liverpool Daughter Source information: RG10/3777 Registration district: Liverpool Sub-registration district: St Thomas ED, institution, or vessel: 9 Folio: 115 Page: 47 Household schedule number: 263 |

richard thanks but that is the problem as on his marriage certificate it says England only no town and where his father and mothers name were to be it only has Patrick Walsh and no mention of mother at all ,will check for his death in the nsw records now and see if I can find the both parents names as a cross reference from that thank you so much for your trouble will let you know how I go , hope you don't go for the eagles mate regards Lara xx Ps just found my ggrandfathers death in nsw bdm 1910 but no mothers name still so maybe she was the reason he ran away to Australia so she didn't get a mention or maybe she had passed away. What do you think why no mother???? |

Hi Lara. I see your problem! Starnge that no mother is listed - father I could understand, but unusual that he didn't know his mother's name... Makes it hard to know whether that's him in the 1871 census or not. Did either his marriage or death have a date of birth, or just a year? Don't really know what else to suggest - sorry! Eagles ... oh well, the real comp hasn't started yet... we'll be back in September :o) Richard |

Hi Richard do you think the nsw bdm would tell me if there is an age on the actual cert. if i email them he is only 46 if it is the same one who was on the ship and the same if he is the boy from liverpool he was born 1863 in ireland according to what you found so I will look at his wife's records and also his daughter my nan to see if i can get a clue thanks for trying to help me Lara xx |

Hi, the 1871 census for Stockport in Cheshire shows a 6 year old Charles WALSH living in the Workhouse as an orphan. It could be that he was shipped off to Australia as soon as he was old enough! Regards, Mary |

Yes Karen as I said he arrived in Australia in 1880, if he is the same one my gggrandfather he married in 1888 and on his place of birth it says England so that is why I decided to try there for any trace of him ,lara |

Thanks Mary yes this could well be him too , I think maybe if I can find the shipping records at that end I could maybe learn a little more such as what area he came from and maybe parents names if he wasn't the orphan I can't see any other way of checking but will try to get the complete record of his arrival here to see if that gives an area or place he resided in before he came out here thank you for your reply muuch appreciated regards Lara |

I don't think NSW BDM will give you any info without paying for it. I do have a cheaper solution though. In NSW there are a couple of transcription agents who have free access to BDM. They charge but no where near as much. With the site I'm about to give you you can also obtain partial details of a certificate. the site is www.marbract.com.au |
