Im completely stuck on my mums side of the family tree. I cant get any further back. My G Grandmother is called Mary McDade, she was born in Scotland about 1898-1900. But i cant find her anywhere on a 1901 census. She had a sister called Annie but i have no idea when she was born, and I cant find her either. My G Grandfather is John Black born roughly 1890-1905 in Scotland. But when i go on the census there are so many John Blacks i dont know which one he is! All i know is he had 2 brothers called William and Albert but there may be more siblings Ive asked everyone i can on my mums side and between them all this is the only information ive gathered. Nobody can find any birth/death certificates either. How can i get further back? Are there any website with census just for Scotland? Why is Mary not on there? My mum swears she was born before 1901! please help!, thank you x

Scotland is very much on its own site for census.you need 'scotlands people'. Unless they came over the border pre 1901 Jess

Hello Natalie Try Scotlands People, it is a pay site, but has all scottish records online, you can view them there and then rather than ordering certs. It is a lot easier researching scottish people as all birth certs have mother and fathers names and when and where they married (very usefull) also 1871 to 1901 census good luck jamie

The IGI gives a Mary McDade born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire 14 Feb 1900. Could that be her? Sue in Berks

Susan

Susan Report 8 May 2005 21:19

That IGI entry gives Mary's parents as John McDade and Elizabeth Beattle and her death as 26 Jan 1970. That should act as a check on whether it is the correct Mary. Sue

Thank you for looking that up for me, but ive just checked with my mum and she says Mary was definately born in June and she died in the 1950's so its not her unfortunately. Thanks again though x

Natalie I dont have enough credits to do a search for you but had a quick look on scotlandspeople and there are 5 Mary Mcdades listed between the age of 1 and 5 on the 1901 census. May be worth joining, 30 credits cost £6, 1 credit to view all entries and 5 credits to view image, hope that helps Leanne x
