Hi everybody, thank-you for all your helpful comments. I'm not sure if I'm any nearer yet to those elusive ancestors but I am hot on their trail!

Hi All, .... but...... Portsea Island is exactly that. A potted history from 1800 on only...As the Island developed, villages and districts were mooted as almost separate towns on the island, the original town became “Old Portsmouth” alongside grew “Southsea”, as did Buckland and Landport. ....“Milton” and “Copnor” remained as villages, while those of “Stamshaw”,“Hilsea“, “Kingston “ soon reached the area becoming known as “North End”. By the late 1830’s the Town planners and politicians had their own ideas and district boundaries were encompassed into “Urban Districts for administration purposes (shown on FreeBDM). Most of Portsmouth’s paper records were destroyed in the loss of the Guildhall during WW 2. I have a small collection of Portsmouth History books (including the infamous “WW1 Roll of Honour” and etc. If I can help with any “address” questions please mail. Bob

Landport, North End, Buckland etc are localities , whose names only seem to start to crop up from say the 1850s. It is really helpful to get hold of a good c19th map in order to work out exactly where you are. Alan Godfrey maps do some very good old Ordnance Survey maps for under £3 which show the streets by name and the individual houses. Lots of Portsmouth was flattened in WW2 and the city fathers completed the act of destruction in the 1960s, so it is very difficult to work out where anything was unless you have at least a pre-war map.

Bev, Landport is an area within Portsea. I always understood Portsea to cover Portsmouth and Southsea, approximately the area south of the A27, below Hilsea creek maggie

Hi Alverstoke is in Gosport. Not sure whether it is a district in its own right or wether it would come under Portsmouth Jane

None of those should come under Portsea. Portsea has various meanings. Geographically, the Isle of Portsea is the bit of land on which Portsmouth and Portsea lie. The Parish of Portsea historically was St Mary's and most of the registers have been filmed and are on the IGI. Alverstoke is very close to Portsmouth, but separated by a strip of water. It has its own registration district.

Could anyone tell me, please, if any of these places might have come under Portsea in the 1830's? Froxfield, Alverstoke or North Waltham.
