Hi Lyn, I did wonder, but there are various other reasons I think John/Daniel are probably the same person, and there was only one Daniel born right place in the right year. Trudy

Trudy I don't want to be a spoilsport but - Just a word of caution - could it be that there were 2 Daniels? One with a father named Daniel and one with a father named John - who could be brothers. I only say this as I have a similar situation with my Owen family. John, had a son called John and his brother Joseph also had a son called John - both born the same year. Lyn

My great grandmothers marriage certificate lists her father as John William Rankin and her birth lists him as William John . Another relative used both his names at different times in his life and this made him hard to find. Perhaps Daniel /John is the same person Deborah

I've saved the 1881 image for John T. Mills and Elizabeth if you'd like it. Perhaps the age is wrong for Elizabeth. They have a granddaughter with them. Kath. x

I wondered about this baptism? As you know the father has a relatively (sorry lol) rare occupation, the original record might show up something helpful (I realise it's about year early!!) I've just looked at the entry Kathleen mentioned in 1881 (John and Eliz). if I'm looking at the same one, John was born 1809 in Clerkenwell. I thought Eliz looked like a second wife as she is much younger, so I went back looking for the same John Mills. Couldn't find him in 1871, but in 1861 I think I have him, but his wife was then Susan and (not surprisingly) no Daniel in the house. So it may be back to the drawing board.... Sarah

Hi Kathleen Yes she is, he is shown as a 'fine wood carver' on Daniel's birth cert, so carver and gilder would be about right - do you have the 1881 details - maybe I can trace them backwards. Thanks Trudy PS. Jess - at the minute I'm drawing a blank on the 1861, can't find them anywhere??

Is Daniel's mother called Elizabeth? There is a John Mills, carver and gilder, on the 1881 census with wife Elizabeth. Thought this might be Daniels parents. Kath. x

Hi Jess, haven't tracked them down on the 1861 yet - will have another look now, could be that I couldn't find them because I was looking for two Daniels - see putting a message on here sometimes puts the simple things into perspective - will let you know if I find them. Thanks Trudy

I'd go with what it says on the birth certificate, which is more likely to be correct. Perhaps the vicar at the wedding just got mixed up with the grooms name, and no one noticed at the time. Have you found them on the 1861 census? Kath. x

Wonder if anyone can shed any light on this. Have a marriage cert for my 2xg grandfather DANIEL MILLS, who married LOUISA DABBS on 25th December 1863 at the Parish Church, Hackney. His father is shown as DANIEL MILLS, a wood carver, their address, Mare Street Hackney. Have just received today his birth cert and his father is stated as JOHN MILLS, but he is a ‘fine wood carver’ which is a family profession, my 2x ggrandfather and 1x ggrandfather are both ‘coach carvers’ and my grandfather was a cabinet maker. The address on the birth cert is ‘3 Duke Street’ and the sub-district is given as St Mathew, Bethnal Green. So, can anyone tell me – who’s the daddy!!!!!!
