I have found 2 possible births for Samuel Moore, according to 1901 census, born Castle Eden. One is registered in Gateshead and the other in Stockton. Does anyone know which would be most likely please? Thanks in advance. Lynne

It is a registration district, so if Edon and Eden are same place the two births you found are incorrect. Easington Created 1st July 1837. Sub-district : Dawdon; Easington; Wingate. Castle Eden is definitely spelt with an 'e', and would have been in Durham. I think you need to find a birth in the Easington registration district. Kath. x

I don't think we are disputing that Castle Eden is in Durham. But I am saying that on the map it is nearer Easington than Stockton, and therefore as Genuki has it (albeit with a spelling error) in Easington Reg. district. Nell

I'm not sure that you have to register a birth where it occurred. I suppose in the 1800's people usually did, but I know from my own grandson that he was born Cottingham which should be Sculcoates district, and they lived Market Weighton which should be Pocklington district, but his birth was actually registered in Beverley, as I was there at the time. Kath. x

Also, just because he said he was born in Castle Eden on the census, doesn't mean he actually was born there! Some of my lot changed their birthplace details on every census, and I'm sure that some of them had no idea where they were born so just guessed. Families that moved around a lot and had lots of kids didn't seem to remember which kids they had in which place either! If you know the parents names, you could order either of the 2 certs with the parents name(s) as checking points - that way its only £3 wasted if incorrect!

Kathleen All events - births, marriages and deaths - have to be registered in the area where the event occurred. However, you can provide the information at any register office - my birth was informed 'by declaration' in Horley though I was born elsewhere. From ONS website: 'Whether or not there is provision for registering at the hospital, you can go to any register office – though things will take a day or two longer if you go to one which does not cover the district in which the baby was born. This is because the registrar will need to forward your information to the district where the birth took place in order for the registration to take place – and it is from here that the birth certificate will be sent to you. Register office opening hours vary from one district to another and most operate an appointment system.'

Thanks Nell - you learn something every day. I did think it strange that we went to Beverley to register my grandson. However in the indexes the registration district IS given as Beverley which is where we went. Kath. x

Lynne Did you get the two birth references from FREEBMD? if so the records are incomplete. Ask for a lookup from 1837 online.

Hi everyone Only just come back to this thread and seen all your replies. I will have another look for a birth registered in the Easington district and see what I can come up with. Jim I did get them from FreeBMD but I do have a few credits for 1837 so will have a look for myself. Thank you all for your input. Lynne
