If someone dies at sea ie sailor etc, is it still registered and would I be able to find it on 1873? even if that person was born in another country? and married in this country? thanks

Tracey, do you mean 1837online? I don't know i suspect that anyone who died would be registered to their place of birth, you could have a go though Good Luck ..MOE!

If someone dies at sea, I think they are registered in the port in which the ship/boat lands next. nell

thanks Nell, have a vague idea about that, was married at birkenhead and had a child at birkenhead a year later, so presumably birkenhead, have not found him or his wife on that particular census tho

My grandfather was lost at sea in 1911, west of Australia from a British vessel that was on route back to Hamburg. THe master made a report in the ships Log & from there a death cert from the Marine Register was issued. I found it at the London records office in the overseas section & was lucky to then find the actual ships log At Kew. Shirley

Thanks Shirley, Unfortunately Cant get to Kew, have no idea what ship he was on, have untangled the family folk lore that said he was a captain, in fact he was a ships steward on marriage certificate, my brain has just gone foggy as to where to go now!

tracey, do you have 1837online? if not i will have a look for you , just put his details on. the more i think about it the more i think if he died on a british ship then the british authorities would have to register it wouldn't they? MOE!

well your first search would be London record Office for the Marine register death entry, that would give you the vessel then you could try Kew. What year range are you looking at ? Shirley

right, on marriage certificate it says he was 32 in 1875, family says he died age 49 so that makes date of death around 1893 (correct me if I'm wrong!) give or take the usual year thanks Moe oooooooops forgot to say his name was William PRATT

Tracey One of mine died at sea of Cholera and he was registered 3 day's after his death when the ship came to port, this was in 1849. His death was on St Cath's index(1837 online) also I didn't think it was him as he was from Marske, sent for the cert. and it was him. Good Luck

Thanks Anne, I do hope I find him, It would narrow things down a bit, wife has been found much later, but on 1901 census and her age was 6 years younger! according to marriage certificate!

sorry moe! lol i did remember to update name , after I posted ! anyway here again in case you didnt get it! William PRATT, (BS) age 32 on marriage certificate(1875) father John Pratt (soldier) died age 49 in 1893(approx)

tracey, can you rule this one out before i move on,; PRATT ARTHUR WILLIAM R age 31 vessel ATRATO page 660. GRO marine death indices 1846-1902. lets just hope it wasn't this one POOR FELLOW MALE 21 vessel BIAFRA page 87.. MOE!
