The one without a name may well have died shortly after birth. If she was born dead she would have been recorded on the stillbirth register. Have you checked to see if there is an infant death shortly afterwards? nell

I found the baptism and burial of baby twins in a parish register of 1862. I knew the probable father but as I hadn't found his marriage, I wanted his wife's maiden name. When I wrote to Herefordshire for the birth certificate of one of them, I sent a short note saying I was wanting to establish the mother's maiden name and whether the boys were twins. When the certificate came, the compiment slip had written on it.... N.B. Daniel was one of twins. Maybe you won't have to buy both certificates either.

The fact that one of the page numbers is 837A suggests an amended entry to me, perhaps a name added. I have in my lot Thomas CONE 10b 661 Thomas COAN 10b 660A I'd guess that minor amendments can be made without much fuss (ie written in the margin) but when it comes to adding/changing the actual name, that's another matter.

Dianne Just to clarify - a stillbirth is where the baby is born dead. There is no birth or death certificate, and until 1927 there was no record at all. After 1927, stillbirths are on a separate closed register, only accessible by parents or siblings of the stillborn child. A baby born living, but which later dies, will have both birth and death certificates. My husband had an elder brother who died at 2 minutes old. His birth and death were registered at the same time and I have both certificates. nell

You're right Nell. I wasn't concentrating as I was cooking the tea at the same time. I shouldn't have written the word stillbirth. However, my reasoning for answering the query was that twins can be found on separate pages. Dianne

I thought if the number was the same of the page but with an 'A' (ie 837 and 837a) after it, it would be an amended certificate, either the name was wrong or they had to correct some incorrect detail on the cert. But I could have my wires crossed here! Kim

Yes it is,Valerie, but I was illustrating that there were two pages covering the births......turn over the page, I should think......unfortunately twins ran for a while in my lott, and none of them survived..... times were 'Ard, and conditions not good........ in fact, of twelve births to one mother, (pre 1900) only four individuals survived to make families of their own...... and in the next generation to another mother,of nine births only five survived Bob
