Ive just trawled cyndis list and it looks like youre unlucky with marriage records with Illinois-other states have readily accessible marriage records up to 1944 and similar, some 1907. illinois seems to stop at 1900,and after that youll need to pay. I was trying to find her maiden name this way. Have looked in various newspaper obituries ,found neither ethel nor samuel, and tried one of the publications that has extensive bmd records, again no luck. On Roots web, there are 5 submitters who have the davis name tracked to illinois from the 1800's to 1900's or present day-might be worth contacting them to see if theres anything. ****NB The shortlist of deaths last night seems comprehensive for cook county-that site is used by the Illinois state genealogical society, and is a government organisation anyway. Where the ambiguity lies is in you not knowing if she died where she resided.

Rosalyn: There is a lot to be had by ordering, online, the information available at the Social Security Death Index. There should be a link by the name you looked up that will allow you to order the informaion and there is also a link advising you of what kind of information can be obtained from the SSDI. Judy

How bizarre.........!!!! I think i went in a different way lol............... TYPE >>>>>>>>> usa death records CLICK ON>>>>>>'online searchable death indexes for the usa' there should now be a list of the states in alphabetical order, scroll down till you see Illinois-this should be in blue lettering on a white background. see.... Online Chicago & Cook County etc.......(has its own link) Then you should be in on the site..(theres a whole load more on that site aswell if you scroll down-all sorts of stuff)

The site states that the death is registered where it happened rather than where the person was residing, and that deaths after 1947 arent available from the archives in the form of a cert. There are 2 Ethel F davis deaths-one specifies Florence,Cook ,Chicago......but they are both wrong-one is 1917,the other 1947. There are Ethel Davis deaths 1930-1944>>>>>>>>(no initial) 22-7-1931 cook chicago 1-8-1932 cook chicago there are 2 others that werent registered in cook, one in elgin st hospital. THIS IS FROM THE ILLINOIS STATE ARCHIVES SITE so is presumably complete-the search i did covered all areas-it does allow you to just do Cook on its own,but my list covered all bases.

Thanks again -she was Ethel F. Davis and died between 1930 and 1944 as Sam remarried when his second wife was widowed in 1943. She was on 1930 census so it probably wasn`t 1930 Rosalyn

Thank you, Alter. If you could find Ethel`s maiden name it would be useful too. Their date of marriage was about 1909 Rosalyn
