You can actually hear them on a quiet day for many miles, even south of the river but Merton is quite a bit south of south of the river! It is really Surrey, so nope, dad doesnt qualify Im afraid! Not even if he ate in Manze's pie shop once a week. You need to be born with the smell of the Thames up your nostrils! Oh gawd, now Im thinking about pie, mash and liquor, drowned in chilli vinegar. Actually guys, when I was down dads (when he was still well about a month ago) I got take away pie, mash and liquor and bought 6 bottles of chilli vinegar from them!

Dockland ancestors do have various church records, updating all the time. If you go on there, a tip, when you do a search in one of the church records just put your grandads surname as it will bring up the lot with that name same price as searching for one person!

Well, not on line but you can get Lambeth at Southwark Archives. You could google and see what they have. Lambeth and Woolwich are actually south of the Thames and not strictly the east end, though often considered as cockney land. If you go to Dockland ancestors there are links on there for waterside parishes - you can buy the cds. They have also transcribed some of the Rotherhithe/Newington parish records on there and they can be viewed online. Im with you Sarah, Ive gone back past all the dates they have transcribed so far.

Hi Heather, Am on the mailing list, I love the site also, just wish they'd add earlier Stepney stuff now....!! (And St George in the East/Whitechapel/Southwark/St James etc etc!!) Hope you're ok! Sarah

I love parishregisters - James Legon who runs it is such a lovely guy and passionate about docklands and genealogy. I do get newsletters when they update, have you added your name for them? You get discounts and stuff. Dont forget if you give a surname only on the search you bring up all the ancestors for the same price as looking for just one.

The site 'parishregister' has recently been updated. I have now found a whole host of baptisms of my rellies on there, its a tad dear at £2.95 a go, but in my case, a lot cheaper (and less draining!), than slogging round London trying to guess where the transient little beggars may have been born!!
