If you find out let me know I would love to do that, I have a feeling it cannot be done from GR you have to have a PAF File I think |

Genealogyprinters did the family trees for the last BBC series of 'Who do you think you are'. They are very friendly and the owner's wife is a member of Genes. Kath. x |

It just shows that you should never rely on GR for the main copy of your tree. Get a family tree program and store every little bit of information there complete with source details. You can then occasionally export to a GEDCOM and update the copy on GR. I have never tried to print my whole tree, far too big! But I often extract part to send to a contact but I usually just use a text file. I sometimes export larger extracts to a PDF file because I can have a very large virtual page size. Legacy Charting Companion lets me juggle the zoom size until it fits on the page. MB |

When you export a gedcom file some programs have the option of who you want to include in that export but most of the time the entire file is exported to gedcom. There are ways and means of splitting a family file so that you end up with a gedcom containing only the people you want not everybody in the file, we do this every day when designing trees for customers but it's a skilled process and is a bit long winded to explain here. It is fairly easy to do in some programs like Family Tree Maker. If you need any help in splitting a file please phone or e-mail me and I'll explain the process. Say for example you wanted to create a tree showing only you, your partner, your kids and grandkids, all of your ancestors and all of your partners ancestors. There are only a couple of programs that will create this sort of tree using a few clicks of the mouse and the resulting tree that the program produces may not be all that pleasing a layout to look at. We can extract those people only from the entire file and use other programs to make a more pleasant looking tree containing just the people you want on it. There are over 40 family history programs produced world wide and we have them all and we know what each program will produce in the way of a tree. We can therefore split a file and use the program that produces the most pleasing looking layout for a tree. Regards Ron www.genealogyprinters(.)com Tel: 01902 836284 |

Printing of a full tree (ancestors and descendants option, left to right) is quite good on Family Tree Discovery site - www.familytreediscovery.net The printable version usually fits onto an A4 width depending on the number of generations in the tree, and content is customizable. Regards, Andy |

With GenesReunited I think you always have to delete your tree before importing a new GEDCOM. Family tree programs will allow you to import whatever you want. With LEGACY I sometimes import the GEDCOM into a dummy database so I can examine it. When I import into LEGACY I can then go through and merge duplicate entries. You just find one duplicate and merge, then the program will work its way through the rest of the relations. I do it that way because if I do a full check for duplicates then it gets boring with so many false matches. MB |

Hi Martin. There is now no need to delete your old tree from Genes when uploading a new gedcom. My wife uploaded her new gedcom containing over 1600 names and did not delete the old one first and it went onto Genes with no problems. Regards Ron www.genealogyprinters(.)com |
