Hi Folks, I don't know about you; but I am getting a bit fed up with people showing me their tree BEFORE they have even checked to see if we have a connection. I'm assuming a lot of people are falling foul of the default tick when sending messages. My Contacts page looks like a forest at times - and half these trees have NO CONNECTION whatsoever. I can hear you saying: 'Why not just delete them'? I do - but they often come back unless the other person takes the tick out. Luckily I am not the sort of person who goes around looking at everyone's personal details or ripping trees off; but there are plenty of people on here who do! Please check your contacts page and remove any ticks where you don't have ANY connections for YOUR own safety and so that MY (and others!) contacts page stops resembling Epping Forest! Cheers, Horatia

i have a forest too but I find deleteing them from contacts gets rid of trees you don't want. Jeanette

Sometimes it works for me sometimes it doesn't - but I still think people should be more careful. It is silly to fill the page up with trees that have nothing to do with me! That tick causes a lot of problems! Cheers, Horatia

my contacts list is just the same. Ive eight pages and maybe two or three pages worth are linked to my tree. Even checking through once a week and deleting those that do not link doesnt stop them coming back. Sounds like some hard pruning is needed!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sue

Ann, Yes, the IT isn't that great on here is it? With all the money they get in subs, you'd think they'd get the website to work properly. They can't claim lack of funds for not doing some serious remedial work on their databases! Cheers, Horatia

Deleted contacts and trees reappear if either of you contact each other again.

Horatia I too so hate that....'Tick' to allow/not allow on the initial contact message page!!! I have deleted from all my 'Contacts' the people who have messaged me with a possible link and have by (in my opinion) mistakingly given me access to their tree. I also contact the messager and say they have 'by accident' given me access to their tree and they should delete the access..... What suprises me is the number who haven't 'yet' deleted my access to their tree :) Chris

Hi Chris, I too am surprised by some people's lackadaisical approach to advertising their personal info to all and sundry - before they have even bothered to check if there is a connection. Yes, most of them never remove that tick even after you have told them you are not related! What's THAT about? Are they too lazy to take a tick out or have they forgotten they allowed it in the first place? It's like inviting everyone who knocks on your door in and giving them a cup of tea - even though they could be Jack The Ripper, The Boston Strangler not to mention Genes Snatchers Anonymous!!! Cheers, Horatia PS God knows how some of these people get on if someone sends them a phishing e-mail. They must open them all AND punch in their bank account numbers!

Peter, I am positive some of my contacts have reappeared even when I HAVEN'Tcontacted them again. I mean, once I have discovered there is no connection why would I contact them again? Cheers, Horatia

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 6 Feb 2006 19:22

Oooh, and I thought it was only me!!! I have permission to see at least 30 trees - I dont remember ever requesting a look, and deleted them all. They came back - and I CERTAINLY have not had further contact with any of these people. I HATE that b***y tick! Surely it is not too much to make it a default that tree permission is withheld unless you expressly give permission, eg. 'If you wish this person to have access to your tree, tick here' - the default being, they dont have access unless you actively tick the box.And perhaps a renewable time limit of say, a month, to mop up all those you have forgotten about. I personally, am not all that worried if someone pinches my tree from here because it has two enormous errors on it, which I cannot face correcting - I would need to delete about 120 people. How unsophisticated! And, the few trees of other members I have looked at, are mostly incomprehensible to me - I cannot see where I would fit in and usually give up in disgust. Olde Crone

Check again - my contacts certainly don't reappear once I have deleted them by clicking on the bin on the far right. You are then prompted to confirm to delete. The name will re-appear in the list, together with previous messages if the person contacts you again, or vice versa, or sends you a pm.

I know how!! I know how!! Imagine you have them on your contacts list with the little tree symbol (so you can view their tree)......at the same time your name is on their contacts list with the little tick in the box (because they have given you permission to view). You delete the contact completely by clickinh the rubbish bin on your Contacts. Their name vanishes Hooray! On their contacts list your name still appears, but the little tick has gone. ''Oh'', they think.....''I thought I gave that Olde Crone permission to view....I'll just tick the box again''....they tick the box and low and behold the name reappears on your contacts with the gree tree again! People who say to me, ''I have given you access to my tree'' invariably only have one name on it!! LOL Merry

Phoenix Report 6 Feb 2006 20:16

I was contacting someone today, so the first thing I did was clear the check box. Unfortunately, as soon as I started typing, that blasted little tick came back. What really upsets me is that there are some people that I have specifically denied access to my tree, after initially allowing it. Then, looking at the list of contacts, the tick is back there again - and believe me, I have not granted permission again or recontacted them.

I have found the best way to keep an eye on things is to have NO NAMES at all on my Contacts list!!! Today I have NO messages in my Inbox, NO messages in my Sent box and one contact, which is Hubby, because sometimes he needs me to view his tree when he's too lazy to do it himself!! Anyone who I ever need to contact are either names that appear often on these boards, so I can just click them, or people where I have made a genuine contact and we have swapped email addys, so no need for their names on Contacts on here. Merry (''no friends'' LOL!)
