Burk on a marriage cert

Sorry Melvyn it's me again. I think the name is Busk thats on the census. It must be a small little township in Oswaldtwistle. I've just googled 'busk oswaldtwistle' and quite a few census type matches come up. |

Melvyn Do you have access to ancestry? If so select the 1851 census, Lancashire, Oswaldtwistle, the enumeration district 2a. On the first page it looks as though the village name is Burk. Well, kind of anyway... |

Can;'t find Oswaldtwistle in Genuki's list of Lancs registration districts. It's part of Blackburn: Blackburn Created 1st July 1837. Sub-districts : Billington; Blackburn; Blackburn Northern; Blackburn South Eastern; Blackburn South Western; Darwen; Hawwood; Mellor; Oswaldtwistle; Witton. GRO volumes : XXI (1837-51); 8e (1852-1930). Billington, Blackburn, Church, Clayton le Dale, Clayton le Moors, Darwen, Dinckley, Eccleshill, Great Harwood, Little Harwood, Livesey, Lower Darwen, Mellor, Osbaldeston, Oswaldtwistle, Over Darwen, Pleasington, Ramsgreave, Rishton, Salesbury, Tockholes, Wilpshire, Witton, Yate and Pickup Bank. Registers now divided between Blackburn with Darwen and Lancashire districts. Can't see anything like Burk here. nell |

According to Genuki, there's a Lancashire town called BULK. It's the one that looks most like Burk that I can find. nell |

The certificate will say where the marriage took place. It would be worth looking at a large scale map for the area. This may be a tiny hamlet in the parish. (I assume it is Burk, by the way, not burk?) |

UD means Urban District. If Burk is in the residence box its probably either Berks for Berkshire or Bucks for Buckinghamshire. Which registration district was it in? nell |

What is meant by the term burk on a marriage cert? it was in the box ' Residence at the time of marriage' the term was used for both parties. Also why was U.D placed after the name of child on a birth cert? I hope some kind person can help |
