I think that what has complicated matters a little is the boundary reorganisations of that area i.e Welsh / Shropshire border - hence lots of Shropshire names starting Llan.....

On James's marriage certificate his father is given as Charles Frederick Thomas - He's a bit of a mystery too!

Thought I'd have a look for this chap nearest his birthyear, in 1851 census: James Thomas abt 1845 Acton Round, Shropshire, England Son Acton Round Shropshire James Thomas abt 1846 St Martins, Shropshire, England Son Bronygarth Shropshire Which doesn't help much, does it?!

I have tried looking for a birth certificate but it is very difficult - there are many Thomases in Shropshire! I have a rough year of birth but was hoping to decipher the place of birth in order to get the birth cert. The old chicken and egg scenario methinks lol

Had a look at the image, comparing the cap letter with S in son, scholar etc on the page, I'd say its much more like an L. But no wiser as to where! nell

you probably have, but have you tried tracing his birth certificate to see if that gives you any clues?

I thought Langs or Lanes or Largs. I see what you mean though it's a swine to read with that big line across the entry!

I am having real problems deciphering a place of birth for a relative on the 1891 census. The relative is James Thomas and it is RG12/2961 folio 62 p 19. The place has been transcribed as Lanre Villays. I can only assume that the second word is village. On other censuses only the county of Shropshire is given as his place of birth. I could do with some help with this one!
