Yes Ann I will, I have already had very positive feedback and lots of help, from many lovely people on genes. I must admit, in the beginning I got a bit carried away, as I suppose lots do. The computer and genes and the different threads have opened up a whole new world to me. It is easy I imagine, to be scared off, when your unsure of what goes on exactly, but people are so eager to come forward and give you a helping hand, and many of those people, take the time to go the extra mile with you, which is so generous of them. You can make out the little pockets of communities, with all the banter that goes on, but thats not a bad thing, when most people are polite and friendly towards each other. And I haven't had anyone snap at my heels yet. I look forward to being around for a while yet. Lin XX

Yes, I hear what your saying Ann and I think purely because I am a newbie, I will go cautiously. Fortunately for me and other newbies, we can and are learning from the mistakes and/or misfortunes of others. Not necessarily mistakes on their part I might add, but rather caused by the unthinking and uncaring attitude of others. Rather reminiscent of the grave robbers of yester-year, if you'll pardon the comparative. I don't think it's fair to paying members for genes not to intercede, when so many members appear to be unhappy about such a situation. After all, on this ocassion it's only one other name. Lin XX

Thats good advice Ann and a good way of protecting ones private information, or trying too at least. I'm still bemused about how this guy got three of my family names. I certainly never gave them out, and because they go way back, even I was not aware that these family members could have ended up in Australia. Being new to this, I haven't gone that far into the research. Initially, with the help of the bmd's and census' etc, it's easy enough for anybody to get plenty of names (of ones own family) up front. But it's not until you get into it proper, that you realise just what you have taken on, and how much work is involved. Also, for someone like myself.......I'm new to the laptop (computers in general), and all the terminology........yet enjoying every moment of the learning process, and very greatful for all the help I have had and am getting............long may you all continue. lol. Just checked my hot matches I had with him/her about a month ago and he/she has deleted them but I've sent an email through GR anyway (box unticked) asking to view their tree in regard to a possible connection. Will let you all know the outcome. night all, it's sleep time here in oz zzzzzzzzzzzz Lesley

Thanks for that warning, I've just located one on my tree (there may be more, I only checked my own surname).

I'm just so glad I did that initially Ann, I'll make sure i'm just as alert in the future too. It can be quite disconcerting something like this, especially when your so new at it. That's why I make a point of coming on the boards as much as I can, to see what you good folk are discussing next. Us newbies can learn so much and it's all rivetting stuff!!! Lin XX

Leslie, Have you got an email address for him? I kept it if you need it, also the Yahoo web address where he is supposedly downloading pictures, for those who have requested them! Lin XX

Lin I don't know about a hobby, it sounds more like a full time job he's doing I'm kinda curious as to what his tree really looks like, it would take ages to load I'm sure. Maybe I should email him and ask if I can have a look, after all he has some of my names too. Surely, GR must have a limit on the file size of a tree. It must crash at some point. mmmm is that what he's trying to do? Lesley :-/

Jen ~ Report 18 Feb 2006 13:30

OMG Lesley, Is he supposed to be claiming to be related to all these people, or just collecting those names he likes the sound of? OR...............Is this really his hobby..........as opposed to the photography? L:in XX

Jen ~ Report 18 Feb 2006 11:39

Seen it Lesley, He does appear to be a pain for some members.....not panicking as much myself now, as I did not give access to my tree, even though he had three family names............where from, I don't know? Checked out tree and don't appear to have any deaths on there that shouldn't be. Lin XX

You should be able to delete the hot match, though, just as normal. Then click on 'save'. Kate.

You cannot get rid of the message. It usually indicates that the person has now deleted the 'hot match' from their tree or may have deleted their whole tree. Lesley
