Hi Just wondering if anyone can help me. Have recently joined Ancestry and something is really boggling my brain. I have print outs of 1891 census with my familes on, but when I do a name search on 1891 census, it does not find it. I have just gone through the long way round, looking up district and then going through each one til I find the sheet with my family on - and it IS there - so why doesn't it find it when I do a name search. Are they not all typed up and put on a searchable database??? Hoping someone can help cos this is driving me nuts. Thanks in advance. Andrea.

Although the names may be correct on the actual page, a lot have been mis-transcribed into something thats completely different to the name itself.. ie: Harrison becomes Horwich??????

Andrea Report 9 Mar 2006 14:18

The names are: George Casey Head 35 Fanny Casey Wife 32 Thomas Casey Son 13 James Casey Son 10 Samuel Casey Son 9 George Casey Son 4 John Casey Son 1 James Preston Visitor 3 They are at 125 Union Buildings, Blackburn, Lancashire. Like I said, I have been and found it, I just don't understand why a name search does not find it - with ANY names. Thanks for helping.

Reason you can't find them is because they have been mis-transcribed as BATTY & PROCTOR ?? A typical case for ancestry:)

Rachel Report 9 Mar 2006 14:29

It's a major mistranscription. If you look at the image, there is a Elias Batty, Head of house in the previous household. All the Caseys are down as Battys. Try searching for James Proctor, visitor, born 1888 and that'll take you to the image. To see how the names are transcribed, when you've found James Proctor click on view record, then click to see the others on the page. Hope thats not too confusing. Rachel

LOL ancestry have taken the head who is on own and made them all Batty when clearly says Casey. I must say well done for finding them i could never have found them. Ok I'm off to check that out. Just one more query then...... ermm, HOW did you find them then???? Need to know this cos have other families that seemed to have disappeared off in a spaceship for 20 or so years before returning to earth and rejoining the census sheets!! Thanks a million. Andrea.

Andrea I only found them as you'd told us the details! I searched for James - no surname - born 1888, relation to head of house - visitor. It only gave a few possible contenders. Sorry I can't be more helpful!

Typed in forename, age -+ 2 years and Blackburn, looked at them until found correct one. Sometimes the wrong name is similar to the one your looking for but in this case it was totally different, it happens. Carrie

Well, it worked. However - really sorry about this - but now I have another problem. I tried to enter a correction. I went through the shenanigans and clicked on 'submit correction' and it came up with 'please enter value for given name / surname' in red - anyone got a clue what it's talking about?? Thanks a million everyone. I would never have thought of searching for forename alone. Well, you all know what I'll be doing for the next few days. Maybe I'll find my other families aswell. You're all brilliant - even if you don't know what the value thing means!

I dont bother with corrections anymore, they have never replied or corrected anything that I have contacted them about yet! Anyway have FUN! :)) Carrie

Andrea, I have made corrections before - just type in the names as as they should be in the blank boxes and then in the larger box give a brief explanation of why you think the index is wrong. The name you correct is added to the name on Ancestry Index as an alternative name - it doesn't correct it but both the wrong and right names will show on a search. Hope this helps, Vera, Manchester

Vera Thats what I tried but it came up with that blurb about entering a value for the given name / surname and wouldn't let me submit it?? Never mind. I have found them now and I will be kind enough to pass on the info to anyone else who is struggling. Thanks again everyone.
