Not being rude Val, but you definitely have the System Restore facility switched on? If you have done something that needed it removing - say if you were running an antivirus when you had a virus on there, you are usually told to switch off the system restore so that it doesnt hold the virus in its memory? Sometimes you can forget to switch it back on? Though I guess you would be able to tell if the dates you are choosing are highlighted as restore points.

Hi Valerie, Have you scanned your PC for spyware? That often causes PCs to slow down. Or your PC may need a good spring clean. Try using Microsofts own clean up tool Go to: START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/DISC CLEANUP Cheers, Horatia

How old is your PC. Perhaps it is on its way out? Do you have too many programmes in the notification area or system tray? If you are using Internet Explorer it might be worth seeing that you aren't storing too many temp internet files. In IE go to Tools/Internet Options then Settings. How many megabytes of storage are you allocating to Temp Internet Files? I would back up all your files if I were you. Just to be on the safe side. Cheers, Horatia

Valerie, Are you running short on hard drive space? System Restore probably requires a chunk of free space for temporary files while it does it's job. These files are then automatically deleted when complete. The possible shortage of free space could also be the reason for your PC slowing down as it tries to find enough disc space for the virual memory (swapfile). Do you notice an unusual amount of hard drive activity (hard drive light on continuously or flashing ). This could also be the reason fo MO Jo's System Restore not working one day and then working the next. Try a disc cleanup and also uninstall/delete anything you don't use anymore. Paul

Heather Report 8 Apr 2006 11:31

Val, I dont know if that is good or bad, but I just clicked on my temp files to get shot of them and its taken about 5 minutes - so there must have been a lot!

Horatia Report 8 Apr 2006 12:16

Paul Report 8 Apr 2006 12:43

The setting for how much space to use for temporary internet files is normally set automatically by Windows. You can modify it, as you have seen, but unless you are seriously short of hard drive space it is not usually an issue. A size of 14725 means just under 15 meg, probably a bit big but no problem normally,. although Val you can easily get back some space by reducing it to under 10000 (approx 10 meg) Paul
