Can anyone give me any ideas on this. My great grandfather William Ketley was born 31 Oct 1852 in Good Easter, Essex. He came to Australia in 1874 and never left. I have just found a William Kettley born 1843 in Good Easter on the 1901 census, administrative County Essex, Civil Parish, Dunmow. I am thinking this must be a cousin or such, so possibly share Grandparents. As I am stuck on my William's parents James and Eliza, does anyone have ideas on going back from this William to see if they join somewhere. |

James may have had a brother who had children, Local parish records could tell you. |

If I were you I would ignore the 'other' William for now and just try to trace your William back, because you could trace the other one back and still not find out if he was connected. You need to find James and Eliza's marriage - have you looked through the GRO indexes quarter-by-quarter for it, working backwards from William's birth? Do you already have Eliza's maiden name? If not, then you will be able to get it by ordering William's birth certificate. Kate. |

Have you found him on the 1861 census? He should be with his parents there, but I can't find him. There are several Williams from Good Easter born at about the right time, but none with a surname resembling Ketley. The only Ketley born in Good Easter I found was a Lucy, born 1844, working as a servant in Chelmsford, Essex. |

Is this you on the Curious Fox board? Ketley, Ayley (Mar 06) Essex (County, ESS) Looking for James Ketley and wife Eliza (nee Ayley) who had son William at Good Easter in 1852. William came to Australia in 1874. |

Thanks everyone. I have James and Eliza Ayley marriage in 1840. They are both born c 1818. They are definately my William's parents. Paul, Yes that's me on Curious Fox. Cheryl, I thought it probably was them on census just with William's birth as 1857 instead of 1852. Easy enough mistake. However, as Eliza and James were marrided in 1840 could their dates of birth be so far out as well?? It would make James 16 and Eliza 10 when they married. Do you often see so many wrong dates in one family census. I know nothing about the other children yet. |

Rodney, Is it possible to access Parish Records from any websites. Ones that need payments are fine. |

Sorry, just realised that you can't search the registers on the Essex record office site but Essex Family history society will do a search for you for a very reasonable cost: http://www.esfh.org.uk/ Heather |

could be James and Eliza in 1851, though of course William wasn't born then so there's nothing to make a specific connection on James Batley abt 1819 Good Easter, Essex, England Head Good Easter Essex Eliza Batley abt 1819 Roxwell Wife Good Easter Essex Elizabeth Batley abt 1848 Good Easter Daughter Good Easter Essex George Batley abt 1841 Good Easter Son Good Easter Essex John Batley abt 1850 Good Easter Son Good Easter Essex Lucy Batley abt 1844 Good Easter Daughter Good Easter Essex The name on the image is unreadable, but Lucy matches the Lucy Ketley found by Mary from Italy |

just to complicate things, there was another James Ketley in Good Easter in 1841: Thos Little abt 1771 Essex, England Good Easter Essex Ursala Little abt 1776 Essex, England Good Easter Essex Ambrose Sowell abt 1826 Essex, England Good Easter Essex James Thelly abt 1821 Essex, England Good Easter Essex so, if John had a brother James, he could be either of them |

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure what to do now. Think I need to email Essex Family History group and ask them. Any of those census could be them. When William came to Australia he changed the spelling to double T so it became Kettley. Maybe they liked change. I have hundreds of people in the family tree so far (doing all sides,it gives you something to go with when you hit a brickwall), but I have yet to get a Smith or a Jones. Mind you the Scottish side were Grants and Gordons and not much else. Scary. |
