hi could someone help me please. i have had an email back from manchester central library the archives dept regarding an entry for a marriage in a parish register in 1826. this is what they have said see below in a mo love linda x

I have looked up the marriage in the registers of St Chad, Rochdale, and the entry gives the following information: Edmund Schofield of Wicken hole of this parish, Weaver, and Betty Crossley of Bury of the Parish of Bury, Spinster, were married in this church by Banns 3rd September 1826 by me James Aspinall, Curate. Neither Edmund nor Betty signed the register, but instead left their mark. The witnesses were Thomas Fletcher and D. Nield, who, seeing as they were witnesses to other marriages at the church, were probably parish officials. I thought it might have given me the ages or dob of edmond but it hasnt but not only that i have never heard of wicken hole or parish of weaver !! can anyone shed any light onto where this is i know it must be around rochdale lancs but what would it be called today. and has anyone any suggestions for me finding edmonds birth.? thanks linda x

Hi Lindy - Weaver would have been the occupation of the bridegroom. Both parties must have been over 21. If they were under 21 their ages should have been given and the marriage would be 'with consent of parents'. For a bride and groom over 21 it is quite usual for the ages not to be given. Do you have his date of death? A death certificate should show his age at death which will enable you to work out his birth year.

Weaver is his occupation. Wicken Hole is presumably part of St Chad's parish (as he is ''of Wicken Hole'', but also ''of this parish'') Everything else is all you would expect to receive :o(( Merry

Wicken Hole gets a mention on the Saddleworth Historical Society website. Perhaps it is on Saddleworth Moor?

Have you found him on the 1841 census? This should give you a clue as to his age, at least to the nearest 5 years.

Oh whats up with me today. of course in 1841 his age is 35 and betty is 33 so that would make edmond around 1806. and betty about 1808 is that right . now how do i find out which edmond scholfield is the right one. ? you are all being really great . i am just being a bit of a duffer today - dont know why love linda x

Have had a quick look on the IGI and there seems to be quite a selection of them!!! Maybe you could get a clue from the names that he gave his children? He may have named one of his sons after his father? I am afraid that I don't know much about that area of the country so am not sure where the different parishes are. Is there by any chance an older couple in the same parish on the 1841 that might be his parents?
