I would be grateful if someone could answer a question regarding membership.
I’ve just had correspondence with someone who has my relatives in their tree and I don’t know why so I asked. Might have had permission to look at my tree in the very distant past but certainly hasn't had permission to use the information. Must have just copied it. My note was replied to with the excuse that they let their membership lapse last year as they are going to move the tree to Ancestry. I’ve always been under the impression that if you didn’t pay a membership that you couldn’t correspond with other members. Am I right?
Many thanks. Pat.

A member can pm a non member and get a reply. The non member cannot instigate correspondence.

I’m not sure if they can move their tree without a current sub.

You can check if they still have access to your tree by checking your contacts.

Thank you for replying.
I was the one who instigated the call so that’s why they could reply. They haven’t access to my tree now but could have had in the distant past. Just to make doubly sure where will I find contacts? When I sent the message I saw that I could click on give permission or ask for permission.

If you haven’t deleted any messages, all your contacts will show in your inbox and sent message folder..

Just because someone has your relatives in a tree doesn’t mean they’ve copied it from yours.

People have my relatives in trees but have NEVER had access to mine, as I simply don’t give it to ANYONE.

If you share your tree you lose the right to withhold the details. Sharing, by definition, means you are giving the other person carte blanche to do with it what they wish

I have at some point chosen to hide living members so maybe the information has been taken before I decided to do that which was many moons ago. Certainly doesn’t have permission now.
Thank you for the help.
Pat.

Have a look at section 6 of the privacy policy reached by clicking a link in the T & C’s.

This might cover the issue you have.

Remember that no-one is supposed to include ANY living members in a GR tree unless they have permission from the person concerned. This applies whether or not you choose to 'hide' them
You persist with the assumption that because someone has in their tree some names which are in yours that they have 'taken' them.
The person in question could have done the research..............you should consider that as an option before making accusations
