Erika- thank you.

I will follow this up as best I can.

Time not always on my side but can't thank you all enough.

I thought initially that it might be Sorkwoth - as did AG - but had a re-think on seeing that every lower case ‘e’ on the page is written backwards by today’s standards.

On your 2023 thread, you asked if there was a Devon OPC site. AG gave you the link, which wasn’t acknowledged. Did you do anything about it?

Thank you for all taking the time to look over the name.

It's a beastly one and one that probably won't be accounted for.

Looks to me like Sorkwoth.

FMP shows baptisms to a John and Sarah Knill in Tawstock
Mary 1755, Susanna 1758 and John 1760 (? died 1823 Tawstock age 63).

Gong backwards over the OPR pages there was also a John to John and Sarah Knill in 1753 Sarah 1751 (page header has 1750 but the calendar went from Lady's Day to Lady's Day back then)

Whether these are children of "your" John and Sarah or not but at least it shows the surname Knill was around in Tawstock

Sarah's surname looks to start with s then E - other obvious e's on the page are 'back to front' so the name might well end in eth or ell

I've also ticked FMP to say the names have been looked for before -

Thread initially posted 2017 and revived 2023

Yes, I stuck the OPR image into my Keepsake for folks to look at and found suggested various alternative spellings for the Serkwell surname - "soundex from freebmd"

The previous thread is on Find Ancestors. With Sarah Serkwell among the words in its title. December 2023

I’ve looked previously at this record on FMP. Have you asked about it before? Or is someone else on here researching exactly the same marriage?

Transcribed as SERKWETT. Looks to me more like Sorkwoth, but that seems equally unlikely TBH. You have to remember that people in those times were mostly illiterate, and those recording info often simply wrote what they heard.

Easy to look at on FMP for anyone who subscribes to the site

Looking at other records on the page, the person recording the info seems consistently to write his ‘e’ the wrong way round, so the name may actually be as transcribed, or with ‘th’ in place of the double ‘t’

Look carefully at other records on the page to try decipher the woman’s surname more accurately

How was it transcribed?

The clip is from a marriage. I cannot read it therefore I'm unable to go further back I this line.

AG - thank you for that. I'm glad my memory hasn't gone!! :-) :-)

Andysmum -

It's just a ready-made request for you to ask permission now.
It doesn't mean you've asked in the past.

I have just clicked on the link and discovered, to my astonishment, that I have requested that the image be opened. I can't remember doing it, nor his name and it isn't dated, but it certainly isn't recent. :-S :-S

You appear to have marked the image as "private" in your Keepsafe.
If you mark it "public" (or whatever equivalent word they use) , then we'll be able to view it without having to ask your permission.

The link you have posted only takes us to a page where we can ask your permission to view the image. I've done so.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Sep 2025 16:58

It’s marked private. I have sent you a PM.

But what are you trying to achieve, please?

To find if a digital image can be downloaded, simply click on the button to the left of the info and see what it offers you

Options are digital image, PDF and cert

Baptisms are not on the GRO site…..only births and deaths

Phillip

Phillip Report 5 Sep 2025 16:44

Hi Erika. With regard to the Mitchell baptism, it's on the list. There are several I wish to order but the GRO site isn't clear (to me) whether some are available digitally....

It has been difficult to progress any further with this surname I cannot read. None ofvtte suggestions appear to link anywhere.

I'll try the keepsake....if I can work out how to share!!!

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 5 Sep 2025 15:49

Only if you someone is willing to tell you their personal e-mail, unless you can upload it to your keepsafe and share that

What is the reason for wishing to do this?
What do you hope to achieve?

Did you manage to download the cert you were looking for on your Mitchell thread?

Phillip

Phillip Report 5 Sep 2025 15:31

Is this possible/appropriate on here?

Thank you
