i am trying to read and understand details on the 1861 census, but I can't seem to a) understand what Abel means in relation section and b) read what his occupation is. Would someone be kind enough and take a look for me please.

Looking at the image there isn't an address so I looked at previous images, on image 37 it looks like its saying its a poor house. Was wondering if that is where he is?

oooops I am so sorry Gwyn, I put Roome instead of Redman....Roome is another line in my family that I am also researching where I have had difficulty.

Thank you for that, there are quite a few working in the garden, some are scholars..... because there was one that is a pauper I thought that maybe he was working in a work house.

Can you tell me what an Abelman is please?

I think they have put Abel....meaning able... capable of work.
It is clearer to see on the previous page by George Moon's name.

Further down the page are Old Men..or.. Boys.. so just a catagory of different people within the establishment.
I can't work out what is written beside Abel Man on Stephen's entry before the Work in Garden occupation.

Looks like they were in a Workhouse, I have searched for his father Stephen Redmam born c1822 to see when he might of died and it looks like he died in 1853 Tenterden. After doing a search for Stephen's Mother Elizabeth born c1824 and found that she is also where her son Stephen is. I am now assuming that after Elizabeth's Husband died she and her children, haven't looked yet but am assuming she had more, ended up in the Workhouse.

Thank you Gweyn I have found Isabella on that Census, but couldn't see Sarah. Did you see whether she was also in the Workhouse?

Looks like she had a couple of children out of Wedlock, as there is no way they could of been her husbands as am sure he died.

cant see sahrah daughter in 1861 thought she may have been with elizabeths parents but no luck
