I looked at the image of the 1891 ..... it most certainly is Medd

and the description of relationship is certainly Gradnchild

and the marriage of a William Henry Chattaway to an AnnElizabeth Medd was found by Gwyn

Nannylicious Report 14 Apr 2011 21:05

Just a thought but instead of Medd could the 1901 census return have been transcribed incorrectly and it should read Head? This would describe her as Head's grandchild i.e. grandchild to the head of the household.

Copperplate writing can often be mistranscribed especially when an "H" looks like an "M" and vice versa. Double vowels (ee, ea, eo) are often typed up incorrectly too.

On one my census returns, I found two grandchildren by the surname of Pendrey who had been typed up as Prudsey. This sent me on a while goose chase looking for a daughter who had married a Mr. Prudsey!

Sherlock Holmes had nothing on us family history reseachers!

Interesting! I think you're right that it's just a case of records being transcribed incorrectly. A search for Elly Medd brought her up for me. I also searched marriage records, and a William Henry Chattaway (my great-grandfather) married an Ann Elizabeth Medd in 1893. I think I've found Etty's parents!

Thanks for all the help.

Mayfield Report 12 Apr 2011 18:50

A search for Etty Medd seems to bring up the same page.
Perhaps Medd was simply her other grandparents name.
For some reason the census taker put in a ditto first or perhaps she was using both names.

Mayfield

Marn Report 12 Apr 2011 18:39

I don't think it is the mother's name. I only say this because I tracked Etty Chattaway down on familysearch.org and her details were transcribed as this:

Relationship to Head of Household: Medd Grd Child

So unless it's been transcribed incorrectly, I'm stumped too!

As far as I'm aware, William and Elizabeth Harriet Chattaway had 12 children, and only four of them were (legally) old enough to parent a child born in 1893 - one of those four being my great-grandfather, who is not only missing from census records at this time, but who also abandoned other children later on in life. I'm probably way off the mark, though.

Do you know who her parents were? No chance it's mother's name? (This is my way of saying I am stumped!!)

The girl in question doesn't come up if you search for her directly, but if you look for her grandfather (Wm Chattaway, b. 1847 Coventry), she appears on the same household record, along with her grandmother (Elizabeth Harriet) and a number of her aunts and uncles. Her name is Etty Chattaway, b. 1893 in Lancashire, Blackpool.

Appreciate the help.

On the 1901 census my great-great-grandparents have an 8-year-old girl living with them. They share surnames and the relation of this girl to head of household is listed as 'medd grd child'. I'm pretty sure 'grd child' stands for 'grandchild', but does anyone know what 'medd' might mean?

Thanks in advance.
