If I can't find the man I'm looking for the 1881 Census and I cannot find his birth registered, how can I go back further?He is on the 1891 and 1901 Census.They both state he was born in 1857 in Lambeth (or Southwark) I know his marriage details (this also confirms he was born in 1857) I know his father was called John, (like himself) But that's where it ends. What now?

Remember the census will be a year out if it was taken before his birthday. Could be 1856.

I have even tried looking at birth records for up to three years either way of his 'stated' birth year, and still cannot find him.

Susan, I have found that often when an ancestor leaves home, he/she might put as their birthplace where they lived in their early years because they never knew/were told exactly where they were born.

Have you tried using Lambeth as a keyword rather than as a POB?

Have you found him in 1861 or 1871?

I have hunted for a direct ancestor in 1861 and just can't find her. She is more than likely in the same town where she married in 1865.
Sometimes we have to use the information which IS there and not worry about the missing years, ...It niggles though..

If you post his name and birth year, someone else may help in the search.

His name is John Townsend.He is on the 1891 and the 1901 Census.He got married on 15th Sept 1889 to Mary Eliz.Wilson.His age shown as 32 (born approx 1857) and he was a carman.His address at that time was in Lambeth.His Father John's profession shown as a Sawyer.
