Find Ancestors

Hi

Hoping someone may be able to find official records for John's birth and baptism. John was my 2 great grandfather.

Biographical details I have are:
B:25 December 1825 Foulsham, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom
D:6 November 1894 Orange, New South Wales, Australia

I have a copy of his death certificate so have confirmed his death date. On this certificate it listed his parents as Michael Middleton and Mary Ann Phillips. I have tried to find a record of his parents but have been unsuccessful.

If anyone is able to do a look up or direct me to where I may be able to find this information, I would be very appreciative.

Where have you been :looking? You know where he was born so you should be able to find his birth records - Ancestry is quite good for Norfolk and have you tried Family Search.

When did he migrate to Australia?

Before 1st July 1837, ONLY Baptism records are available

1825 is before the start of civil registration, so there is no birth certificate as such.
The most you can hope for is a baptism record. In a few cases the DOB is mentioned, usually if the baptism was much later than the birth.

However, I don't see his baptism on Ancestry, nor any sign of his parents.

Possible marriage for John to Ellen in Mauritius 1847-9 shown on FMP (GRO Chaplains Returns, British Armed Forces records)

Thanks Erika I have tried securing a copy of the marriage certificate from the Civil Office in Mauritius - however I need to have an 'agent' there to assist me. Seems they will not send out. I even joined some genealogical groups in Mauritius and was lucky enough to get a transcript of John and Ellen's daughter baptism. I do know that John and Ellen did marry in Mauritius as that is on their death certificates. I have never seen a copy of the marriage certificate to know if he listed his parents - his father's Christian name was listed as Micheal and Mary Ann Phillips as his mother on his death certificate. Knowing from experience that may not always be correct - but I'm hoping since his wife was the informant she has listed this correctly

Abby can I ask where you found that record. There is family rumour that John was adopted - might be worth following up further. The baptism date is before the supposed birth date but that could be wrong. thanks

The marriage in Mauritius is recorded by the GRO, to which office you should be able to apply for a copy cert

Your OP states that John was born in Foulsham. What is the basis for this assertion?

The names of his parents from the death cert are only 'as known' to the informant and may not be accurate.
