You're welcome AG...just a shame there's no proof but does sound like it could be him.

ER is East Riding...........one of three historical areas of Yorkshire.

The other two were North and West......NO South

For INFO

The administrative division of the East Riding of Yorkshire originated in antiquity. Unlike most counties in Great Britain, which were divided anciently into hundreds, Yorkshire was divided first into three ridings and then into numerous wapentakes within each riding.

I sent for the digital image:

27 May 1880.
Military Hospital Gate Fulford ER [not sure about the ER ?]
James Boffin, male, 27 years.
Shoeing smith, 4th Dragoon Guards,.
Cause of death: Abscesses (foot); Pyaemia 5 days.
Certified by A Hudson, Surgeon Major.
Informant: W Boyle, present at death, York Barracks.

Still no proof that he's the right man, but it's a good possibility.

Neither "my" James, nor the one who died, seem to appear anywhere else, so they may well be one and the same.

Thanks, Alviegal!

That would fit Aviegal. He could have moved there with work or a marriage.

Thanks for the suggestion, Kay - but no, that's not him.

That John Boffin married Ann Howe, and their marriage record (1872) shows his father's name as Edward.
