Thank you ArgyllGran. That is reassuring :-)

ArgyllGran Report 27 Nov 2024 09:46

That's what I would assume.

A similar thing happened in my family.

My grandmother, with her mother and brother, moved from England to Scotland about 1902.
Her brother's 1926 death cert said that their father was deceased.
(His brother-in-law - my grandfather - was the informant.)
I spent a long time looking in vain for their father's death between c1902 and 1926.

It was only when the 1939 Register became available that I found him alive and well.
He didn't actually die until 1943.

He and his wife had separated when my great-uncle was about 10.
Apparently my grandfather (the informant) had never heard him mentioned, and had assumed he had died.

or not?? :-S

Graham Report 26 Nov 2024 22:55

I am guessing as her mother died in 1899 when she was ten and her father remarried in 1901 she perhaps never saw him again. She doesn't appear with him again on censuses so advised he was deceased. I guess that is what you thought also?? :-D

Glad you picked up on that…………. ;-) ;-)

He was alive and well on 1921 census, as per my post

Graham Report 26 Nov 2024 21:29

The only thing I have just noticed is that according to Elizabeth Ellen's marriage (my first post) certificate in 1913 her father Thomas Heap was deceased.
We have him as dying in 1931??

VERY long shot:

Eliza Heap
in the 1901 England Census
Name Eliza Heap
Age 10
Estimated Birth Year abt 1891
Relation to Head Inmate
Gender Female
Birth Place Manchester, Lancashire, England
Civil parish Portsmouth
Ecclesiastical parish St Bartholomew
Town Portsmouth
County/Island Hampshire
Country England
Registration district Portsmouth
Sub-registration district Portsmouth and Mid Southsea
ED, institution, or vessel Nazareth House for Aged Poor and Orphaned Children
Neighbors
Piece 1008
Folio 35
Page number 5
Household schedule number 1

Address: Lawrence Road, Southsea.

Interestingly, this link says that the home's intake was limited to girls from Hampshire, Berkshire and the Channel Islands.
https://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/SouthseaNH/

Eliza, whoever she is, must therefore have been living in that area prior to admission to the home.

I know Elizabeth wasn't an orphan - but her mother had died, and maybe her father couldn't cope with all the children.

Also, she married in Hampshire.
But, as I said - a VERY long shot.

I wonder if James and Joseph are one and the same, and listed twice in 1901 ??
