Hello

Thomas Steel was baptised in 1787 in Stapleton, Cumberland to Thomas Steel and Eleanor Turnbal.

Whom did he marry?

There are two possible records, 1808 in Saint James, Whitehaven to Eleanor Benn and 1807 in Bromfield to Mary Browne

However, I do not believe these are him since whitehaven and bromfield are over the other side of Cumberland and in those days they rarely travelled far, he would have married close to Stapleton

any help would be appreciated <3

Do you have reason to think he married?

When did he die?

Is he on 1841 census.............or later?

You should work backwards when doing FH research.............

Yes, the Thomas Steel in the census married an Eleanor, but you said in your opening post that it couldn't be the Thomas you are looking at, because of the location.

Also, the one shown in 1841 census was certainly born before 1787, as his YOB is shown as 1786 and, in any case,ages of over-15's were rounded down to the nearest '5'.

The child baptised in 1787 could have died the next day....................

As I said earlier, you should work BACKWARDS..............that is, from yourself, checking every step of the way

Thomas Steel, baptised in 1787 is the son of Thomas Steel and Eleanor Turnbal, Thomas's brother is Joseph Steel, baptised in 1803, born in 1797.

Joseph is my great, great, great, great grandfather <3

OK, at least the connection is clear, but Joseph's sibling(s) may not have survived to adulthood

The name Thomas Steel isn't uncommon, and as you yourself have found, two men of that name married in a different part of the county within a .year of each other.

I'm just saying that you need to explore all possibilities

reading it again, the census cannot be him since it gives Lancashire as the location of birth, not Cumberland
